devine appointments and dr duffy

You guys are not going to believe this story I am about to tell you. My sister was diagnosed with colon cancer last week. She went to her gyn for her yearly check up, the gyn found blood in her stool when she did that test that they do. she told her to get a colonoscopy done. so she does the colonoscopy and dr. kemler finds 3 polyps. he takes them out and it turns out 1 is cancerous. so he tells her, you need a surgeon. he suggests Dr. Massi in New Britain. so we go to Dr. Massi and he draws on this picture where her cancer is. Im there and Im asking him a ton of questions, like do you do this surgery laproscopically? what is the recovery time? etc... anyway, he does not do it laproscopically. He gives me the same lame excuse all doctors give that dont know how to do laps. He says I can see better if I open her up. Which is not true. Dr. Bell says you can see better when they do laps because they blow you out like your a gafelta fish and the scope magnifys everything up to 100 times so they can so a whole heckofalot better. anyway i pester my sister to get a second opinion with dr bell's office. at first everyone in the family was really annoyed with me for rocking the boat, but i figure, my sister sucks at healing, and the last thing she needs is a wound infection which she ALWAYS gets, so i talk her into going to see dr bells office (in the mean time she has this dream about seeing a dr duffy) so I call dr bells office and take her for the appt. it turns out that his partner, DR. Duffy is a colo rectal specialist so he sees her (and she has dreamed about meeting a dr. duffy), he sits down and looks at her report from dr. kemler and he says, Denise, your cancer is not on the right side of your body, its in the rectum. We are both dumbstruck because dr. massi said it was way over on the right side of her body, far into the colon. he even drew us a picture and dr duffy is looking at the picture dr massi drew and he said, no its in the rectum. im calling dr kemler he says. so he calls dr kemler and sure enough, dr massi misdiagnosed where the cancer was. he would have operated on denise and taken out the wrong part of her colon AND he would have left the cancer in there had i not been a pain and MADE her see dr duffy. dr massi calls her later and starts to back peddle about his huge mistake. he says, well i was going to explore once i got in there to get the cancer out. and he says i was just going to look for the spot dr kemler marked with ink and take that out. dr kemler NEVER marked the spot with ink. its obvious that dr massi never even read my sisters report and was just going to cut her open. so now her surgery is going to be done by dr duffy and dr longo, and dr bell. they are all going to be in the room with her. and if you are not aware of this, our doctors are surgeoens for all gastro problems not just weight loss surgery. so if you ever have another issue in your life where you need a skilled surgeon. it is them. dr duffy is going to do a partial lap on my sister so that her incisions are no so large. they call it a lap assist. they do a small 2 in*****ision in the abdomin so they can get the piece of colon out. but the recovery time is much better. with me having my weight loss surgery and all of this happening with my sister I would say that God had me do all this stuff first and pave the way for her so that she would have the best care possible when it came to her needing help. talk about a devine appointment. if it had not been for dr duffy, my sister would have had the wrong surgery and could have died, because her colon cancer is progressed enough that waiting longer would have put her past the point where she could have been treated. we owe it all to dr duffy for being so alert and on the ball. what scares me is that dr massi is the chief of surgery at nbgh. pretty scarry huh. denises surgery is next wednesday at yale. all of you who pray, please pray that she does not need chemo and that she will not need to have an ielostomy. (temporary colostomy bag) pray she has a quick recovery, and he is able to do a total lap, no assist incision. thanks for your prayers. God Bless you Lauren

Lauren, Colon Cancer runs rampant in my family. I actually have to have a colonoscopy every 3 years due to a polyp found last time that was the kind that can turn into cancer. I remember when my dad and his sister went in for the surgery. I will be thinking of your family and praying for Denise next Wednesday. Warmest Blessings, Nancy K

Lauren- my prayers are with you and your sis. What a wonderful advocate you are for her. She's lucky to have you. I'm glad that you brought up that many surgeons don't just do bypass. Dr. Aranow is my surgeon for life! If I have any problems, you can bet he is the one I'm gonna run to. I trust him with my life. That's SO very important when you're choosing what doctor to let operate on you! again, my prayers are with your sister for the best possible outcome! hugs, Lisa C
