hello all....just wondering about the excess skin issue...if you exercise your butt off, will it still be bad?  I can[t imagine finding the money to have a tummy tuck in the future!

Hello,

I have not had surgery yet, but in looking on these forums, if you exercise , you can loose some of the skin, but also if you start having the "apron" as they call it, if it gets itchy, irritated, anything along those lines, you should make an appt w/ your doctor asap, so that its noted and you may qualify for your insurance to cover it!

good Luck

I know people that don't have alot of excess skin. It depends on how long you were overweight and your age. I also know someone who excecises and her arms look great and that is my big problem. There are many factors involved in if you have the excess skin and how much. I know I wouldn't trade being a size 16 jeans (down from 36+) and a L or XL top (down from 4X and 5X) on 5 meds down from 7 (I have had my antidepressants changed from one to two and added one for vertigo) for no skin!

I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.

Hi Dawn...I was worried about the same thing...I look great in clothes...but when I remove them there are quite a few reminders of my past obesity....SO I went to the gym, got a great deal and had one free session with the trainer....(I went with my friend who had WLS a few years before I did)...for my friend, she just wanted to 'tone up'.....which is great for her.....I have ALWAYS wanted to look like a body builder so I told the trainer my situation with the excess skin and told him I want to look like Hulk Hogan muscle wise....I figure the bigger my muscles, the more it would fill out my skin.  The trainer gave us the same exercise...just different weights, sets,  reps......It is working wonderfully!!  I am so proud of myself....I can wear tank tops and you can see muscle.....not sickening like veins bulging or anything like that....I cannot wait for bathing suit season...it is the very first time I have EVER said that......and I am proud of myself!    When it comes to exercise, you go girl!!  Get in as much as you can....AND on the days that I work out, I have to consume 2200 calories.....go figure....once you increase your metabolism you're golden......as far as the belly skin....I am contemplating surgery....it would be nice to have a flat stomach....(NEVER HAD ONE IN MY LIFE)....good luck sweetie!!~laura

Once skin is damaged it won't completely go back. Your age does matter (I am hoping my age will help the skin issue). How much weight you have to lose also matters. If you have to lose 200 lbs. then you are going to have more excess skin than someone who only needs to lose 100. The way I look at it is, I am so willing to have the excess skin if it means I am going to have more energy. I really did the surgery to feel better more than to look better (but that's a great bonus). Who knows, maybe you'll get a hernia, then insurance will pay for your tummy tuck.

Exercise isn't really a factor.   It's your skin.  Either it will tighten up or it's too damaged and it won't.  Smoking and age are probably factors.  So are genetics, and so is luck.

If you're concerned, start saving now.  You won't want to do surgery for this kind of thing for at least a few years even if you turn out to need it.

And if you don't need it, buy yourself a present with that money ;-)
