white coating over tongue

hello.. i am six days outta surgery and i feel good..tired but good..i have to start walking today... its been so crappy out i havent been able to do anything...but today i noticced that my tongue is getting thick...a little white coat over it...and i have loose stools... any one else have this..i am sure you have..but i just want to know if there is anything i can do...i appreciate all you have to offer...thanks and happy mothers day to all you mothers out there.... beth

Hey there Beth, Are you getting enough fluids? Usually a white tongue can signal the start of dehyration. You may want to try increasing your fluids. Good luck! Kristin

hey thanks..that just might be it..i am not getting in enough. water, its so hard... i am trying...i never thought of dehydraytion... lol.....thanks again...today i will try to drink more and see how i feel... thanks again beth

Hi Beth... You might be dehydrated.. or possibly might have developed Thrush. Thrush is commonly developed when a person is exposed to antibiotics.. check with your doctor.. a simple swish and swallow with Nystatin (prescription) it will clear quickly!! becky

Hi Beth, I had the white coating also since mid last week, It's disgusting. I went to "Prompt Care" Yesterday at my local hospital...It's Thrush or a Yeast Infection. The dr. put me on a low antibiotic (liquid) to get rid of any bacteria in my system, and also a "swish & Swallow" for my tongue. My suggestion is to get it looked at by your primary. The Dr at the hospital said that after having such major surgery the stress your body is under can cause a yeast infection (bacterial). Hope this helps...PS...nothing over the counter will get rid of the Thrush. I was advised to brush my tongue with warm water & baking soda to help the film, however you'll still need the "swish & swallow" to get it cleared up. YUCK! Mickey PS Yes my stools are loose also.
