Concerns Post-op
Hello Everyone,
Well I'm home from surgery. Let's just say the pain I'm experiencing where Dr. B opened me, is INCREDIBLY awful..& I hope will get better with time.
I was on floor 5 & everyone was incredibly nice.
I have been running a low grade fever off & on since the surgery, I'm drinking, walking, resting, and using the "breather" thing from the hospital..yet it goes away & comes back. My lung Dr. was a little concerned however my lungs & breathing are normal. I just did my temp & it was running 100.7 where there's no warning bells with this low of a fever it has been as high as 101 during my stay at the hospital. I'm wondering if it's the anesthesia I was under?
Also I just had a very serious bout of diariaa over the past hour...I had this before when I was on an IV when I was giving birth to Lukey however I'm concerned. I feel very dizzy, but I also stopped taking my ZOLOFT and the last time was Tuesday before the surgery. One of the side affects is dizziness from withdrawals. I just took a liquid form of Zoloft & I hope the dizziness is just from the withdrawals.
Has anyone else dealt with a low grade fever after surgery and diarria?
Very gross subject, I apologize
Mickey
So far fluids are staying in..

A low-grade fever is probably normal. Did the doctor prescribe Cephalexin or something like that? I just looked at my diary. I had surgery (open) on October 11, and on October 24, I was still running a low-grade fever in the 99-100 degree range, 13 days after surgery. I kept taking the antibiotic and changed my Steri-Strips a few times, anf finally removed them on October 25 so I could wash around the incision. The fever gradually subsided and was gone by October 29, some three weeks after surgery.
As far as the diarrhea and/or loose stool, better get used to it. Some bariatric patients have been known to clear a room in a matter of seconds.
As far as Zoloft, I doubt that an antidepressant would have any of the effects you describe, but I'm not a physician. There is some evidence that Zoloft may cause some loose stools, but it's sometimes unclear if the symptom was the direct result of the medication or the result of some other condition. That is, the antidepressant may cause malaise, which may cause another condition that leads to upset stomach and diarrhea. It's sometimes difficult to interpret these studies and side effects, though. Here's link to one such study:

I also take Zoloft and I find that if I don't take it for a few days that I have episodes like that and also get Migraines. It's really horrible. As far as the "other" problem, get used to it. It will be like that for probably a week or two. I know gross. I was on a liquid diet for the first 2 weeks and after I started eating more regular food it eventually evened out. You're doing great! The pain will get better. Did they give you a binder (like a girdle)? If so wear it and make it snug it really helps with the pain, espcially when you're moving around.
