I am scheduled for surgery on December 1st. Ever since I got approved, my eating has been almost out of control! It is as bad as it has ever been, and I can't seem to stop it. Has this happened to anyone else pre-surgery?

Oh yeah, I had a whole bunch of "last suppers"!! I made sure I ate everything I wasn't going to be able to eat after the surgery...or at least the things I thought I wasn't going to be able to have - you know, pasta, bread, Swedish Fish!!! - never want to eat those again - too many - got gummy tummy, yuck!

Good luck - do your best to take it easy - schedule the splurges so you are not doing them all the time! I planned my family's dinner for a couple of weeks based on what I wanted -

Most important is to follow your doctor's orders - hang in there - you can do this!

Hi Michael,
LOL -  I ate whatever I could lay my hands on.  I had to have (fill in the blank) one last time.  At least that was what I thought was going to happen.  But it is not true.
You do get to eat after.  But before surgery you think you're never going to be able to eat _____ again, so you endulge yourself.
Enjoy it.
And just know that once you have surgery you have a window and you MUST use the window to the Best of your ability.  Don't waste a day.  Do your walking and excerising & staying away from bad Carbs and get the most weight off you can during that time.  Follow the rules.  Once the window closes it is harder to lose.  Only because we now eat MORE than during our window time.
Good Luck with your surgery and enjoy every meal and snack you have now BUT know that it's not the last time you will be eating them.
I promise.

Michael...

Cleansing breath...
What you are feeling is the typical PANIC... when reality sets in... upon being approved for surgery.
this is to be expected.

What I finally came to right before my surgery was this...

From an emtional perspective...

THERE IS NO LAST SUPPER.... NO LAST FOOD.
THERE IS NO FOOD that will replace that empty whole we all try to fill.

So I finally got to the place (after eating a few fav foods) where I stepped off that treadmill and stepped onto the path of supporting my body for the upcoming journey of bringing it to health. It was a golden moment for me, to realize this. I did this with conscious intent. I was upfront and present for this magnificent event. I felt proud to make a choice for myself that spoke volumes. and...

IT WAS FREEING.

then there was my introduction to what i named... "the beast".
think of Sigorny Weaver's alien... comes from behind my head and swings to face me... saying...
"I AM HUNGRY... FEED ME!"  At first, I was alarmed... then a peaceful sense came over me and I realized that this was a part of me that needed to be embraced rather than pushed away. So I began to listen to it and told it that I would feed it good food and it would be ok. When I did that... it subsided and went back into it's cave.

for me part of giving up the unhealthy eating was like...
breaking up with an abusive lover. It was not as easy as I make it sound here.    But it was very doable.

GOOD LUCK.

I had this a bit, too.  I think we all do.  You do think that you'll never be able to eat again, but, in truth, you will!  Just in small amounts.  You'll be able to eat the foods you enjoy in time.  Just the sugars and carbs will have to be limited...

My last meal the day before surgery was twin lobsters!! yes,TWO lobsters...right off the boat in Pt. Judith RI!  No sides..just the meat and lots of butter!

Well, I still eat lobster, just not with too much butter.  Shellfish, especially shrimp are a staple in my diet to this day.  I made mushed up ****tail shrimp with sauce in week 2 post op for meals!

Take it easy...you don't want to gain your weight back and have Dr A refuse you on surgery day cause you gained.  He wants your liver nice and lean so it doesn't come flapping out at him like a dorsal fin.

Walk a lot to keep the jitters at bay and keep you from snacking...

Start your weighing and measuring now to get into the habit.
