Question for Dr. Barba's post op patients
Hi all,
My surgery is in less than 3 weeks and I was wondering what are the pre-op requirements before the surgey. I am having open rny and I want to know if I need to be on a liquid diet a week before surgery because my friends want to throw me a "losing weight" party 5 days before surgery. Any info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Delicia
You should always follow your doctor's instructions, and if he hasn't told you, call Dr. Barba or Felix and ask. But normally, liquid diet is for laproscopic, not open. Whatever you do, do not gain any weight before surgery. The less you weigh before surgery, the easier it will be on both you and your doctor.
The week before surgery, I ate fairly light because I didn't want to be all bound up immediately after surgery. For me, that worked out well. March 16 will be here before you know it, I wish you the best.

Thanks for replying Steve. I am definitely changing my eating patterns and have dropped 15 pounds since my last visit to the dietician. My pre-op class is 3/3 but I'm just inpatient and just want to know what to expect now before my friends go all out on spending for a party that I can't really enjoy! I am definitely eating fairly light right now and avoiding the "last supper syndrome!"
Delicia, Definitely call Dr. Barba's office, speak to Felix, 727-4099 I think is his direct line, I may be wrong. They'll fill you in. There may be a more significant prep for the open procedure because I think the bowel is involved in the procedure. Anyway, the only way to be sure is to call.. Good luck.........Jen
Your pre op meeting will give you all the details you need for the week before surgery. The one pre-condition he has is that you do not gain any weight before surgery. I ate everything I wanted the week before, of course thinking that I would never be able to eat again!
Congrats on your 15 pound loss, that's a great way to start!
Best of luck
