Pre-op diet
Dr Aranow wants me to Lose 12 pounds before he will submit the information for Insurance approval. Initally it was 10, But at the Nut appointment I gained 2 since I met the surgeon. Just curious why they want you to do this? It's the only thing left I have to do.
I know they want me to practice eating certain foods a ertain way etc,
I want this so bad and It's hard to lose that much, which is why I'm having the surgery in the first place.
Thanks
Chrissy
Contrarian point of view . . . but, you can effectively "shrink" the liver by restricting fats and eliminating alcohol for a few weeks before surgery.
Secondly, I understand the mantra that pre-operative weight loss is supposed to reveal a patient's ability to stick to a post-operative program. But, studies show that pre-op weight loss is the least dispositive indicia of post-op success. Given the neuro-chemical changes that occur with surgery and the physical impediments to feeling hunger for a while, avoiding "bad" foods and losing weight is radically different post-op than it is for a pre-op; so, it is not really fair to demand that people who could never lose weight consistently and need their insides restructured must somehow overcome their own histories and do something which surgery will help them with before they can have that surgery.

I agree. Dr. Bell also did not require a pre-op diet....said it doesn't make one bit of difference. He also said that it's not really true that you can't see as well doing the surgery laproscopically rather than open (he actually can see BETTER due to the magnification with the lap).
Anyone considering WLS should first decide which procedure they really want and THEN choose their surgeon based on their experience in performing that specific surgery type.

I was told it was so it would be easier for Dr. A. to do the surgery. I agree with Steve, if it was to show we can do it we wouldn't need the surgery. I know he told me the extra 10 pounds I lost really helped him out when he did my surgery. Try the 1200 cal post-op maitnance diet. I lost like crazy on that. I followed it M-F and went off it on the weekends. I didn't over do it but just relaxed a bit on what I ate.

Not gonna lie, but that diet was HORRIBLE! I called it the Ethipian Diet because I felt malnourished for 5 days! I felt like the 5 days were never going to end! I was starving and had headaches and no energy. I also was advised that it helps shrink the liver a bit so the Dr. can move it out of the way more easily. Keep on going.....I ended up losing 14 in 5 days. Good Luck
