PRE-OP LIQUID DIET- 1 WEEK

I have surgery scheduled Thursday, 2/10, with Dr. Barba. I started the pre-op liquid diet this past Thursday. We were to have carnation instant breakfast with other 0 zero calorie liquids to stay 1000 calories. Well, I cant have dairy so I used soy milk (stupid me didnt realize CIB has nonfat milk in it). My stomach started to get sick. (dairy brings on my colitis sometime). I called Judy, she told me to drink the Boost Breeze. I bought some last night and will try it today. I think I have been under 1000 calories Thursday and Friday. Just a question: to those of you who have other doctors that do the 1 week preop liquid diet- did they ever allow you to have a piece of baked fish with no coating or anything, or say a few shrimp. I thought the idea was to lose weight (which I have already-6 lbs-water I'm sure). Doesnt just losing weight shrink the liver or is there some other secret behind the liquid diet? I am going to stick with the boost breeze but there is only 8 grams of protein per can. I will make some homemade chicken soup and I will puree the carrots, onions and celery and drink the broth. Only 5 more days of liquids. Thanks for letting me vent. Joanne

No problem with the venting. Vent away. If the Dr told you liquids only, then I would stick to liquids. You want your surgery to go as smoothly as possible. Jello does count as a liquid, so eat as much of that as you want. I also reccomend sugar free ice pops to satisfy the crunching urge. You'll do just fine. Just a short time to go. Maggie

Hey Joanne! Good Luck on the 10th. I to am a pateint of Dr Barbas. I did the liquid diet as well.. The reason for doing that is not to loose weight although it does happen. The reason is I am assuming you are having lapascopic and because of that they want the liver to shrink as much as possible. They have to move it during surgery because it covers the stmach area and the smaller it is the better. Less risk of complications. My suggestion is don't have the fish or any solids. It is hard I know believe me I did it as well. But here I am just over 2 months out and I am eating whatever I want... of course protien protein and more protein... careful foods choices, you know the drill!!!! I look back and remember doing the liquids and thinking wow, I will never be able to eat again!!!!! Any questions feel free to email me cas8063@aol Carrie
