I have just decided to go for Bypass surgery and I have all my specialist appt scheduled for this week, but I was wondering how long does it usually take from deciding to have the surgery to actually having it.  I mean of course if you are really strict about getting everything done that you need too.  Thanx

I had to be in my doctor's program for 6 months and then it was two months after approval due to lack of sick time. I could have had it done 7 months from my first appointment.

First of all, does your insurance company have any specific requirements you need to fullfill, like a 6 month medically monitored diet? That would make a difference. If not, than after all appointments are done and reports are in and you have done all other requirements like meeting with dietician, attend support meetings or any other neccessary things then you would get an appointment to see surgeon and after that I would guess if everything checks out they would submit to insurance companay and after approval you could make a date and that would depend on the doctors schedule.

It took me about six months from beginning of process to surgery and I had been looking into and investigating doctors and hospitals during the prior year.

Best of luck

my insurance company did not require any diet...I did have to provide letters of medical necessity from my primary care and cardiologist...but once I had completed my appointments...I saw Dr. Bell and was scheduled for surgery three weeks later...there was a six week wait for the shrink consult...

Best of luck....

I'm seeing Dr. Barba too!  I attended one of his seminars back around the beginning of July and have completed all of the required appointments and am just waiting now for the sleep apnea report to come back in about another week or so.  I wish I had done all of the appointments the same week  like you as it was starting to get on my nerves.

At  your 2nd nutritional visit (2hr class) you will probably be given a date to meet with the surgeon, as I was.  I will be meeting with him the middle of October.  I'm hoping he can do the surgery before Christmas so that it's covered under this years insurance deductible.

You should contact your insurance company first to find out what is covered and how much is covered and what you're responsible for, and if they require any specific attempts at weight loss or if you have to have a medically supervised diet plan for 3-6mos as I've ready many blogs that they do.

Not sure if your interested but I just bought a book about weight loss surgery and it was great!  It's called Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies and covers just about everything and anything out would want to know before, during and after.  I also think this website is fantasic as I've learned so much just from reading what other people have posted.

I wish you great success!
