Angela, I have been thinking of this man and his family all day. The son of a friend of mine is on the Newington police force. They are all grieving and our hearts go out to them. Domestic disturbance calls are the most dangerous situations for police officers. Things can get so unpredictable and strong emotions are usually involved, which can quickly lead to violence. Our prayers are with both families who are feeling the effect of this tragedy. Ann

I was watching the news early this morning and saw someone was holding an officer. I am so sorry to hear that he died. Does he have any children. My heart goes out to the family. Also, was the man that was holding him hostage killed also? It is so sad these things happen. Joanne

HI Joanne Peter responded to a domestic violence call with another officer last night. The man in question was in his cellar...Peter went down the stairs first and was shot in the chest....he was held hostage for 13 hours. Exactly when he died is uncertain. The man who shot him commited sucide this afternoon. Peter leaves a wife and two grown children. I also feel sorry for the other policemen I'm sure they did everything possible but this will haunt them forever thank you for your concern angel

Angel, As I sat here watching the news today, I was so sorry for the family of Peter Lavery, watching his cousine try and speak just broke my heart. His family is in my thoughts and prayers, I feel so awful when things like this happen to anyone. I will also say a prayer for the family of the man who committed the crime - he must have been one unhappy person. Nobody deserves to die in the manner Pete did. Life is very short, glad I was with a lot of people I love this evening. Time is precious. Thinking of you and your son as well, Nancy K

Angela, I have been following this story since it broke the other night. Living so close to what happened I felt very drawn to it. It is a very tragic situation and my heart goes out to his family and friends and to the residents of Newington who seemed to all came together as a family that has lost a brother. My prayers and thoughts are with his family as well as your son for his lost as well. Love, Phyllis

Hi Angela, I've been grieving for this poor family all weekend. This happened less than a mile from my house. We were sitting and listening to the gun shots, the SWAT team and the tear gas all night. I knew it couldn't end good. My heart hurts so badly for them. My mother just called (she lives 2 streets away from the tragedy) and said that the Town of Newington is cancelling school on Tuesday to honor Officer Lavery. I just started to cry when I heard it. All my love, Tammy

I am definitely feeling the loss without even knowing this man. My father was a police officer however he is now retired. We would pray every day that he would come home safe and sound. A couple years after retirement he lost a good friend in a high speed chase, his name was George Dingwall, he was a Middletown policeman and a great guy. I don't think people appreciate the jobs they do until something like this happens. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the fallen officer. God Bless.
