Does anyone that has had the Surgery and has Colonial know if they cover this procedure? I need to financially plan for my work absence and I have Colonial but am not sure so I have just started working OT to cover the 6 week gap. Any help would be great!

I have Colonial and I have had it for years and so has a coworker who had this surgery... To qualify for it with BCBS it had to be deemed "medically necessary"..therefore Colonial covers it. Send for the paperwork now and get it filled out ahead of time....as they do take their time... The policy I have covers any sick time after a 14 day elimination period that is documented illness or surgery. I never noticed it getting too fussy about the particulars... Sher'

I had a different type of short term disability, but was paid w/ no problem. They do not need to know what procedure you had. Besides your insurance has deemed it "Medically Necessary" so they should too! On my paperwork, my Dr's office just put "Major Abdominal Surgery". This was not a lie and no one questioned anything! Hope this helps a bit, Carmen

This is funny this comes today. I had my surgery on Dec 1st and my STD are telling me they are approving me till Jan 4th (my month follw up). I told them my doctor recommends his patients taking 6 weeks if we are able. They said because I had it lap and I have a sitting job I need to have some complication to be approved for longer... I am not planning on going back till mid Jan so either way I am staying out the 6 weeks.... even my boss told me the dr says when we can go back not the STD people. Good Luck, Carrie

Hi Kristan, I too have Colonial and they were great. I got paid from Day 1. My doctor would only sign for 4 weeks off so that is what I took. I could have gone back to work after 2 weeks but I was enjoying the time off. My check came really quickly once I submitted everything. I would suggest getting the application filled out ahead of time and having your doctor sign it on your first follow up visit. It sure was nice to get that extra check. I had more than enough sick time so I got paid twice Good luck!! Linda
