I am considering Dr Giles for surgery when he starts in New Britain-I was told today that it will be about a month until his office is set up-I have already been cleared by psy, cardio-I still need an UGI. I met with 2 dieticans and was told 2 totaly different things-the one with Dr A called me an outright liar and said medication could not cause weight gain-as an RN I know this is not true-I have tried to email his office and call and talk to him-and no one will allow it-When I initially met with him he told me I had to lose 20lbs-to me this is reasonsible, but since we met last Jan I have been started on new meds for a chronic pain problem htat cause increase wt. in my appt with the ditican she is now insisting I have to loss 48 lbs, so I am looking elsewhere-besides NB is closer to home and will make it easier to get to groups (10 min). Are there groups that Dr giles does now that I can attend, or nearby support groups that are open? Thanks for all your help everyone-you have answered many of my questions and gotten me even more motivated for the surgery-wish me luck that this all works out-Jeanne

Hey Jeanne, Just came back from Dr. Giles' support group meeting actually. He meets on the second Monday of the month. Tonight he led the group with a discussion about his move. It's a work in progress but I came out of that meeting just feeling that his program is going to be top notch with all the resources he needs to make it top notch. If you can wait, I would. He is such a great spirit and in my first meeting with him back in May I spent three hours with him. He gave me that quality time I felt I needed. Please let me know if you have any questions. I would be glad to try to answer them. Good luck, Phyllis

Hi Phyllis-when and where are Dr Giles support groups and are they open to anyone or do I have to register-my own MD from the Middlesex area today recommended Dr Giles and agreed that Dr A's dietican is very unreasonable. Thanks for your help-I am really excited about getting this done. Jeanne

Sorry you had a bad experience with the dietician...everyone knows that certain meds can cause weight gain and failing that also make it much more difficult to lose. This is not the first incident I have read about this dietician, but I am glad you have found a good alternative...I have coworkers who had Aranow and rave about him..I am sure he is good, but I am also going to remain open to investigate others before taking the plunge, and I don't care to brook auxillary staff that are a pain. Seems like some of these people forget they are rendering a SERVICE that WE pay THEM for...I get sick of the tail wagging the dog. I am also too old to become a groupie...LOL.. I wish you all the luck in the world and who knows..maybe we will meet a some seminar or other! God Speed! Sher'

Hi Jeanne! I would follow Dr Giles to the end of the earth! There was a moment of impatience about a month ago, but with all the good that will come of his move to New Britain, he is so very worth the wait!! The first meeting I had with him and his staff back in Feb., he spent 4 hrs with me and I think he would have spent another 4 if it meant that I understood exactly what I was getting into. I told him things about my past that other doctors have done nothing but critisize ( ex using cocaine to try to loose more weight ) and never ever made me feel uncomfortable. He seemed to understand the amount of desperation that it would have taken for me to go that far. Come to the next support meeting, meet the people that have already had the surgery and have been dealing with the man for the last several years, and see how he interacts with all of his patients...the before, during, and after patients. I don't think that I have worked with ANY Dr ( and Heavens knows there have been a ton! ) that has shown me the amount of care, concern, compasion and has given me a feeling of his dedication to my well being as Dr Giles has. I don't know how to better recommend him. Come visit us in Dec!! Take good care! Heather
