I will qualify for a Lap Band? I was wondering what criteria they use to determine if someone qualifies for the Lap Band? If someone is over 50BMI do they automatically qualify or should they have tried 10 weight loss programs and failed? I have always been very overweight and I am worried that I would not qualify because I have not "Tried hard enough". Conversely would anyone say that I was to big for the band and insist on the RNY? Thanks!

Every Dr is different when decideing who qualifies for which procedure. It also depends on what the nutritionist and therapist say after your consults. I am sure a BMI over 50 does not rule you out (maybe w/ some Dr's, but not all). Your own personal health issues also help the Dr determine which procedure he/she feels would be best for you. If you are a big sweets eater, the band may not be the best choice though since you don't have to worry about dumping... That's my own opinion though. Good luck, Carmen

Your biggest qualification will be based upon the insurance company approval. You may qualify for anything, but if they chose not to allow it and pay for a different surgery, it might change your options. Peter

Hi Sid After a lot of research I choose the lap band; it is not for everyone and some insurance companies do still consider it "experimental" and do not pay for it. I had a bmi over 50 so it can be done. This is something to discuss with your doctor. good luck angel
