Ibuprofen (Motrin)
I am very aware that we shouldn't take Ibuprofen anymore after having the RNY done but I don't exactly understand why. I was recently told that I have Arthritis in my back ( had 2 car accidents in the last 7 years) and a mild form of Scoliosis. I was also told that we shouldn't take any other type of anti inflammatory. Neither extra strength Tylenol nor Tylenol Arthritis formula works well for me. I don''t want to keep taking the muscle relaxers because they make me really drowsy. Does anyone have any suggestions?
The reason we can't take NSAIDs is because they are aspirin based and can cause internal bleeding. Having our internal "routing" altered, the tablets can get stuck and sit in the jejunum part of the intestine and eat away at the tissue and cause us to literally "bleed out".
Dr Aranow has told both me and especially my husband NOT to take them unless we want to end up in the hospital fighting for our lives.
There are alternatives...Celebrtex is an NSAID, but my PCP doesn't want to prescribe it for me for my aches and pains. So, I take a prescription of Ultram, instead. It works very well for me.
You can take stronger narcotics (with fear of addiction) that do not have motrin in it, but will have to be careful of the dependence issues.
Doesn't the Tylenol Arthritis have some kind of aspirin in it as well? Please be careful taking this. You don't want to bleed internally.
You need to speak to your surgeon and ask what she/he suggests, and to co-ordinate with your PCP or ortho doctor as to how you should be treated.
Good luck!

You may want to consider having the "vertical gastrectomy" instead of the RNY. That way you wouldn't need to worry about taking ibuprofen for your arthritis. Some insurances still think it is an "experimental" procedure however if it your only alternative, they may cover it. I have a few friends who have had it done at Yale due to their medication regime for arthritis and have had excellent results.
Good luck to you!
