What is the best birth control method after surgery? What is everyone using? I am not planning to have any more kids and this would not be the time to get pregnant. Thanks for the info.

Abstinance. HA HA!!! I couldn't resist! My hubby got the "snip snip" so I wouldn't have to worry. ;)

I agree with Tammy. My dh has been snipped also. It's a good idea for him to get this done, it is done in the office and very effective.

I have Merena, an IUD, good for 5 years. Insurance covered it and I LOVE IT. Confirm thsi with your Doc but I hear the pill isn't a good option for us because of the malabsorbtion issue. Good luck...and have fun! -Deb

DEPO or the nuova ring would be better choices, then eventually the BC patch, once you're at an apropriate weight for it. If you mal absorb any BC pills, you're in for trouble if you don't want to get pregnant. I can tell you first hand that I have mal absorption issues with every single medication I've taken orally since surgery, especially hormones. I had depo recommended by my OBGYN since it's not estrogen based and does not contribute to blood clot issues, which most BC pills do. One note- I DO NOT recommend depo for ANYONE who wants more kids though. Too many long term issues floating like a mystery out there regarding ovulation... Good luck. Lisa

I was on the birth control patch and I just switch over to depo because I heard depo was better for wls. I only have a 9 year old son and I really dont think that I will have any more. I waited to go back to school and I just got my associates two weeks and started my bachelors program on Monday. I still need 4 more years of school because I want my master's. I am really on a roll and dont want to put school aside again. So another child is not on my agenda. But dont want to close that option yet of having another child. So I have to see what I am going to do about birth control. Thanks for the responses.

All I can share is my story with Depo. I was on it for eight years and came off it and was able to become pregnant in less than six months. In fact I was pregnant 3 times in two years, lol I personally love the Depo, my husband was snipped as well and I just keep taking the depo so I don't have to deal with TOM. Eileen

I would also recommend the newer IUDs. They're a huge improvement from the old versions. One of them also comes with birth control added, for double the protection. They last for 5 years, but can be taken out at any time if you want to have kiddies. Good luck! Kathy F.

I'm with Deb on this one! I have the Mirena IUD and LOVE it. It only took a few minutes and is good for 5 years. No maintenance, not much follow up. My second choice would be Depo. Good Luck! Carmen
