BCBS STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

karen's battle

I have BCBS of illinois...don't get me started. I have been battling for eight months to get my surgery covered. Each of the blues are owned by different companies...for instance BCBS of Illinois and Texas are both owned by Health Services Corp. BCBS of FL will no longer be covering the surgery as of 2005 and I think Massachusetts may be on that bandwagon as well. You should do some research on the particular company you have. Use Google as your search engine and type in different things...such as BCBS of CT, Gastric Bypass, etc. There are companies that are supposedly going to stop covering it and have posted that in the media. On the other hand...there is a new article out about the surgery and it's by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) who published an article Oct. 13th which revealed all of the health benefits from the weight loss surgery. This is in Barbara Thompsons newsletter. She states that when JAMA talks people listen. You can check out the article highlights on her website. www.wlscenter.com

Kim, I too have Blue Cross/Blue Shield...mine is of MASS. i called them two weeks ago when the rumors started to fly. I was told that they had not heard as of yet that they will be stopping coverage. what they did tell me, was that if for some reason they do, you might be able to still appeal the denial with the fact that it was a preexisiting condition and you were already working on getting the surgery in place. i do know that my insurance only covers the rny and not the lapband.. deanna

I read an article that stated that BCBS of FLORIDA was going to stop approving the surgery...these are different franchises...does not mean that the whole of BCBS.. in the whole country is going to do it...

I called empire blue cross today. They said it is not an exclusion in my policy but you have to meet certain requirements. When I sent an email to them, they would not give me a direct answer and say it was excluded or not. They just said they would need to see all the medical records and then determine if excl or not. You need to call and find out if your plan excludes weight loss surgery. Good luck
