Ok, so I'm celeberating because this is the longest time I have ever gone without having a cigarette in the 10 years that I've smoked, but I really want this surgery and I want as few complications as possible!! Also I had my first appointment with the nutritionist yesterday and when I meet her in a month I have to lose 2 pounds! Two pounds, can you believe it!!! I thought she was going to tell me 20. I know I can do this. I'm just so excited and wanted to share my happiness with the rest of you. Thank God for this message board!

Hi Delicia You did it!!! You can do it!!! True it will make less complications if you are no longer smoking. I am curious who is your doctor? Don't give up and drink alot of water Kathy K

I am with Dr. Barba's office at Saint Francis Hospital. No one told me I had to quit smoking to get the surgery but I saw this gastric bypass surgery on the Discovery channel and the woman smoked and had major complications, including stopping breathing for a while and having yucky stuff suctioned from her lungs. Unfortunately, I've been looking for other patients of Dr. Barba's on this board and haven't been able to locate any of them.

Hi Christine, I'm so happy to find somebody else with Dr. Barba. Where are u in the whole process. I've done my cardiologist and psychiatric appointments and had my first nutritional yesterday. I go back to Melissa on 11/4 to see if I can lose 2 pounds. It seems like it's going to take forever to get the surgery. Do you go to the support group meetings. I'm doing the gastric bypass and the next meeting is on 10/26. Hope to see u there! Delicia

That's sooo great! I smoked for many years, next year will be 15 years nonsmoking for me. You can keep it up! You don't want to have this surgery to get healthy and then suck nicotine into it afterwards!

Congratulation Delicia, The first few days is the hardest, I know it was for me! You really do ahave a great incintive to quit! I know during my hospital stay, I needed the oxygen and I am only 26 and have very healthy lungs. You do not want to risk any complications, it isn't worth it! Keep up the good work, and 2 pounds is nothing! I know you can do that in a month! Carmen
