I just wanted to re-introduce myself. I am Jessica and had my surgery on the 28th. I am 2 days home and feeling pretty good. Today was actually rougher than yesterday, but that could be because I am trying to wean myself off the pain meds. Most of my pain is on my left side and my Dr. says that is where most of the work was done and not to worry. I thankfully haven't suffered with. I hope it doesn't start now. I will say that I feel hungry...is that normal? I haven't seen anyone mention that they felt hungry the first week. Also, is there somewhere on this site or another site that will help you find foods that are good to eat during the different stages?

Jessica, Congratulations on your surgery and welcome home. I hope the pain gets less and less. I had my surgery on the 21st and feeling pretty comfortable now without the pain meds. I can't say I was physically hungry, but most food looked pretty darn good. As for the food list for the different stages, you may want to ask your Dr. or dietician. At Dr. Aranow's we get a handout with all the approved foods on them. Terri

Congrats on the surgery and welcome to the Melting Side! I, too, felt hungry early on.. a lot of people go through this. Interesting, but once I could eat "solid" foods, that hunger dissapated. I was very disappointed when I was experiencing the hunger...I was hoping it would go away...and it did! Keep posting here to let us know how you are doing and if you have questions. Ann

Ann, I am glad you said that about when you started eating solids that your appetite dissapated. I had my 1st day of puree'd food yesterday and I woke up this morning feeling so full and not wanting any food what so ever. Drinking some water now, but wondering how I am going to eat today. I like that feeling better. Terri

Hi Jessica, I had my surgery on 9/24, and I feel hungry often! It is driving me crazy, and at first I thought there was something wrong, but I think it is just because liquids don't last. I will (hopefully) start on purees Wed and am hoping this will help with the feelings of hunger. As for something with the different stages, I was also given handouts by my doctor and the dietician, so I would call you Dr. Good luck, Carmen

Congratulations Jessica on joining us on the losing side. I'm glad you are doing so well. Every day will be better than the next. Did the give you a list of foods in the hospital? One thing I've learned, is that each surgeon has a differant list of stages. Please keep us posted as to how you are progressing. Maggie

Thanks for the input everyone! I am sure once I can eat some of the regular liquids instead of just the clear liquids, it will get better. I'm so glad that there are so many of you that had your sugeries within a week of me...I don't feel so alone!

Hi Jessica, First of all Welcome Home! Secondly, congratulations on your surgery. I, too, was hungry for the first couple of weeks. My surgeon is Dr. Bell, and he only allows water, crystal light, broth, and ensure/boost and sugar free popcicles for the first two weeks. After feeling like I was going to scream, I realized two things. I wasn't really hungry, it was all in my head; and the empty feeling was really gas. It will go away, but it is an awful feeling; I remember it very clearly! As far as what you can and cannot eat, my surgeon gives you a list as you go through the stages, and also the nutritionist assists when necessary. Give them a call. Good luck! JA
