Protein Bars

Any recommendations for good tasting protein bars? I have tried a few that taste like cardboard! I had read in one posting of one that was so good it tasted like a Babe Ruth Bar. Does anyone know the name of it? I am 7 weeks post op and had alot of complications. I have not been eating or drinking well at all and still stuggling with getting enough protein. The Doctor told me yesterday to eat what ever I want. I have no appetite though and for the amount I can eat - it hardly seems worth it. Did anyone else go through this. I worry all the time about it and it's starting to depress me. Leslie

Hi Leslie, Well I think the bars that you are referring to are either the Detour or One-Way Bars. Personally I found them to be just okay. I have tried alot of different ones and have settled on the All-In One Bars - 180 calories, 15 grams of protein as my favorite although I do have the the Atkin's Morning Starts for breakfast occasionally......160 cal, 13 grams of protein. I also like the Strive- 200 cal, 20 grams of protein or the Power Crunch- 185 cal, 13grams of protein. Basically you should try out a few different ones to find what you like. I am not a choc. person (except for Candy) so I look for Berry Flavors, Lemon etc. It is important to eat as starvation mode is not helpful to losing weight or your health. Even if you aren't hungry try to eat things that are soft and soothing. Soups, yogurt, no sugar added ice cream, you can add flavorless protein powder to all those things and get your protein in that way. Hope you begin to feel better real soon Linda

Hi, Leslie! A lot of the bars taste like the box they came in. But I LOVE the chocolate-raspberry ones from Strive. I have been getting those at Trader Joe's. There's a new brand in the grocery story called Carb Well that are very good, too. We've been getting 2 boxes (of 5) for $5.00, and there's a $1 off coupon inside good for your next box. I think the cranberry ones are wonderful, but my husband prefers the peanut butter. If you're a hot cereal fan, I bought a delicious soy-based high protein cereal by Keto, banana flavor, that's really good. I bought that at Vitamin Shoppe. (shrugs) Can't help you with the rest of the questions, tho.

I just wanted to say I'm glad to see you posting. I hope you're feeling a little better each day. I agree with all of what Linda said. Good advice there. Also wanted to mention EAS Carb Control bars. EAS makes some pretty good bars, all with different calorie/protein/sugar ratios, but most are well over 12 grams of protein per bar. They are smaller too, so they are more manageable. You can find them in Walmart or GNC and sometimes at convenience stores around (i find them at Mobil a lot) Now that you're hopefully back on your feet, it's going to be difficult to get into the swing of proper eating, etc. I'm sure that 'eat whatever you want' is not the most helpful direction. So, if you need advice, don't hesitate to post here. We'll all help as much as we can! I also went through the -ugh- why bother even trying to eat phase, so I know exactly what you mean. Eating can be such a chore as a new post op (even as an older post op, sometimes) But, it is a powerful experience to work through and it really can help you to break your old relationship with food and start eating to live. Please also call me if you want to talk. I'm so relieved that you're making good forward progress. I was worried about you. Let's have coffee or something soon, OK? a big hug coming your way...(((((((hug)))))))) Lisa C
