Hi Sandy, I had my RNY a few weeks before you and found that I too had trouble with getting water and fluids in. I did find that mentally, if I used very small paper or plastic cups that hold 5-7 oz., that I was able to take smaller sips and get more in. The "hurt" is starting to fade, I can do about 5 sips through a straw at a time now before I feel that funky full/sick feeling coming on. I HATE that feeling, so I stop at 5 sips. Last week it was 4 sips, so things are looking up. I feel like I spend all day trying to get it all in.... Looks like you're doing good with the protien drinks, I hope you like them. The only thing I can stand the taste of right now is the Carnation No Sugar Added Instant Breakfast (made with Simply Smart skim milk and with a scoop on Any Whey tasteless protein). Combined, it gives me 31grams of protein and I only have to get down 8 oz. Then I start pushing the water and tea until lunch. I promise, more room will come and you may even experience a time (I did) when I never felt full. Luckily, that only lasted a couple of days. I found that cottage cheese did good too, do you like that? Anne

Hi Anne, I do like the protein drinks, although the only one I use is the Atkins Advantage chocolate royale. I'm glad to hear that the hurt does fade after awhile with water, because that has always been my beverage of choice and it drives me crazy that I can't drink it like I used to! I miss the water more than food at this point. Sandy

Hi Sandy, Seems like you are doing pretty well. I have a few suggestions, however, that may help. First, I hope that the 6 oz of coffee was decaf? If not, you will need to increase your water/fluids even more. If it is decaf, it will count towards your fluid intake. Also, I found that sipping on hot decaf herbal tea helped me get alot of fluids in at the beginning. I would make a large cup (20 oz) and sip till it was gone. It went down pretty easy. Keep up the good work. God Bless, Kathy Bilodeau Lap RNY 12/3/03 -98 lbs.

Hi Kathy, No the coffee is regular. Why does that matter regarding the fluid intake? Thanks for the suggestion about the tea. I will try that. Sandy

Hi Sandy, Coffee is a diuretic (sp?) - which means it depletes your body's fluids. You need to add to your fluids, not take away. I'd suggest you stay with decaf - or check with your surgeon/nutritionist to see when you can incorporate caffeine. Since you are having trouble getting in enough water right now, to avoid dehydration, its best to stay away from caffeine for now. God Bless, Kathy Bilodeau
