Help I am having PAIN!!!
Has anyone experienced pain that felt like a Burning sensation and also like something was BULGING out of your side? I have had this pain for a week now and it started on my right side under my rib so Dr Aranow had me come in and he thought FOR sure it was my gallbladder.
He had me go in last friday for an ultrasound of the gallbladder and it came out normal. WELL over the weekend the pain shifted to the EXACT same spot BUT on my left side. If I cough, Laugh, Scream, bend over, Throw up anything that puts strain on it, it BURNS AND STINGS and feels like something is being pulled or as if something is popping out of my side BUT I don't see anything.
Well I had a cat scan that showed NOTHING either. I know I am not just feeling something that is not there. So Dr Aranow is on Vacation until the 17th and said that I should try to wait till then and then he will take me in for exploratory surgery. IT IS KILLING ME THIS WEEKEND and I was thinking about going to the ER but I am afraid since he is not there.
HAS ANYONE HAD A HERNIA AFTER OPEN GASTRIC??? And if so can you PLEASE explain the pain as that is what I think it is.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!
Lisa
I'm so sorry you are going through this pain - I never had a hernia but there was a woman who posted on the pregnancy after weight loss that had a hernia and her symptoms sound a lot like yours - I'll see if I can find the post so you can read it - it was not that long ago........
I hope you feel better and get some relief - if you are in that much pain go to ER at least they could give you something to relieve your pain........
Your in my prayers.

Lisa...how are you feeling now?? Which hospital would you be going to?? Middlesex or a hospital closer to you?? Please don't wait for the Dr. if you are in that much pain...don't be afraid to go....you should be afraid to NOT go....you are an extremely BRAVE person for having gone through the weight loss surgery in the first place....you certainly can go to the ER.....have you spoken to Dr. Aranow's 'on call' dr.?? please let us know how you are!!! (I'm saying a prayer for you and sending you a cyber hug)
WE ARE PUT ON THIS EARTH NOT TO SEE THROUGH EACH OTHER...BUT TO SEE EACH OTHER THROUGH
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one
hand, mudslide in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and
screaming ! HOT DAMN.....WHAT A RIDE!!
BECOME THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE
Well I just got home from Middlesex and they found NOTHING wrong. I amhappy but also upset as I know my body and feel the pain all the time. They said the gallbladder was fine the pancrease was fine and that it might be a pulled muscle or gas pains.. I don't know I will just have to live with it and hope it goes away soon.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL THE RESPONSES.. I will keep you posted.
Lisa
How are you feeling? There is a another woman that posts on the pregnancy board who has unexplained pain - they have given her every test under the sun. They can not find the root cause but are thinking of doing some kind of nerve blocking procedure - I can get her member name and give it to you if you want to talk to her??
Hope you don't have what she has though - she has gone and is going through so much...........
Hope you don't have what she has though - she has gone and is going through so much...........
You have to listen to your intuition - unfortunately most ER's across the country are clueless as to how to manage RNY patients and depend on the bariatric surgeons..........but if your pain is unbearable, they can still give you something to relieve it until the root cause is found.
I sure hope you get relief soon - please keep us updated Lisa.
You're in my thoughts..............

I don't know why the link won't work - but here is what that woman went through with a hernia.....hope you are doing okay Lisa.......

on weds. afternoon i started having some abdominal pains... i thought maybe gas pains. that is nothing unusual for me since wls, so i took some gas-x. i waited a bit, and it kept getting worse. i thought maybe if i took a bath the warm water would help. i laid in the tub, but i just could not get comfortable. the pain kept getting worse. my husband was at physical therapy for his back but was due home anytime. i didn't know what he could do to help me, but i just knew i needed him, so i called his cell. he said he was pulling into the garage, so i hung up. it was getting difficult for me to talk, but i explained to him that i thought i was having really bad gas pains, and i was VERY uncomfortable. he brought me some water, and i took a sip and immediately started vomiting. by this time the pain was getting really severe. i couldn't stand, sit, lay down... anything. i started thinking... "this isn't gas... something is really wrong". i convinced myself to wait a little bit longer to see if the gas-x would work. within the next few minutes the pain had become so intense that i was curled into a ball screaming and crying. my husband got me dressed and had to carry me out to the car. he called the E.R. and told them to meet him at the entrance with a wheelchair. he was worried it was something with the baby, but the pain was too high for it to be anything baby related - it was up in the epigastric area, and there was a very noticeable bulge about the size of my fist there that was rigid. i started hyperventilating because of the pain. my vitals were all dropping critically low. i told the E.R. doc to call one of the surgeons i work with. while they were waiting for him to get there they tried to get an i.v. in which was difficult because my b/p was so low i wasn't perfusing properly. they finally got an i.v. and gave me dilaudid. it only helped for a few minutes. the surgeon got there, and i told him i felt like i was dying. he checked me out, told me i have an incarcerated hernia. wanted to try an ng tube to decompress, and try to buy us some time. he tried 3 times, and i kept pulling them out because they weren't going in the right place. they were cutting off my airway, going into my lung. at this point i started turning blue. they gave me a ton of meds to calm me down/ease the pain. at this point i cannot remember anything. they took me to x-ray to confirm that it was a hernia, and it was. i needed surgery, but because of all the meds and my vitals being unstable it was too risky at this point. so i got admitted to the floor, surgery planned for early a.m. unless i took a turn for the worst. my family and the nurses (this is the floor i work on) told me it was pretty touch and go. several people didn't think i would make it through the night. i woke up i think around 1130 that night, and felt fine. no more pain. no more hard area in my belly. i immediately had my nurses call up to labor and delivery and have them come down to check fetal heart tones to make sure the baby was okay - heart rate was 160's and sounded great. the hernia had resolved itself for the time being. my doc came in that morning and was shocked. i stayed to be monitored, and my doc here consulted with my bariatric surgeon and my ob to figure out a plan. so for now, the plan is to try and wait until i am 18-20 weeks pregnant and then go in for a hernia repair. ob says 18-20 weeks would put the baby at a lower risk for complication related to the general anesthesia. i am almost 15 weeks right now. i am really hoping that i can make it a few more weeks without this happening again. this was the worst pain i have ever felt.
on a better note - i had an ultrasound thursday to make sure the little bean was still okay after all that. baby looks perfect! also found out it a boy! this has been such a crazy pregnancy - if this little guy makes it, he is gonna be a tough cookie! in the ultrasound he was laying back with his head in one hand, sucking his other thumb. he looked very relaxed - like "what's up, guys?"
my daughter stayed with my mother in law, and she came in to see me thurs. evening. she was scared of "momm'y wire's". i am soooo glad to be home with her tonight. hopefully we will have a nice quiet relaxing weekend...
