This may sound stupid or not but if I was never on a medical monitored diet will they make me wait up to a year before I get the surgery. there is nothing that a monitored diet can do for me.Anyways any adivice on my PCP. Getting him to write a letter I don't have a steady PCP actually I just started seeing him in June and I said something to him about this surgery and he is against this surgery He always saying that I should wait awhile because I have R.A. (he is in slang terms a hater). He tellin me to wait let's get your R.A. under control and maybe you can exercise to loose weight ok what about my sever back pain, what about my hypertension, and what about my asthma.Anyways anyone out there help me what should I do?

Have you called your insurance company to see if you need the referral? Do you see any specialists that could write a letter as well? Explain to your PCP why you really would like to have this surgery. If he still will not budge, I would find a new one. Do you have any co-morbidities? Maggie

If your PCP isn't an advocate of WLS...then switch!! You don't have years invested in this doctor and he obviously isn't listening to what you want, so move on. As far as a medically supervised diet it all depends on what your insurance wants. I was on Meridia but thats as close to a supervised diet I had. My ins didn't require it, just a diet history, BMI over 40 and a letter from my PCP. There might have been more but Dr Aranow's office took care of everything. There are good PCP's out there who understand the benefits of WLS...maybe post for one in your area? best of luck!! -Deb
