Losing Weight Preop
Man, I'm having such a hard time. Started the diet for Dr. Aranow so I can lose the desired 10 pounds before surgery. Part of me KNOWS how important it is, and part of me also knows that it will be the last "diet" I'll ever have to be on (the way I am now).
but it is hard, hard hard. So far, so good, but I'm so worried that I won't lose the weight I need to lose before the surgery, and then I'll continue this viscious cycle until I drop.
I went grocery shopping last night and bought really healthy stuff. I completely quit drinking any alcohol a little while ago (social stuff, wine with dinner, etc.) and I just gave up caffeine, sugar, coffee and sode. I think it was Joannie who said that it would be helpful to do that preop so you didn't have to worry about the other withdrawals after the surgery.
Did anyone else have these issues? How did you get thru it and lose the weight before surgery? It certainly doesn't seem like much weight, but it feels like it for sure! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Hi Tammy,
Like you I had 10 pounds to lose before surgery and those were the hardest 10 pounds I ever had to lose! it took me about 3 1/2 weeks, and before I could drop 10 pounds easily during the first 10 days doing Atkins or Weigh****chers.
I suggest you eat healthy, real portion sizes (4 oz of meat, 3/4 cup cereal, etc) and measure everything. A food journal helps too.
Good luck, you'll do it!!

I also am trying to lose the required 10 lbs. I have lost 7..this is hard but I know we will do it sucessfully. Keep trying..I have been drinking shakes..water..salads..water....chicken..water..shakes..water..and walking one mile a day. I sure hope this works out and we will be on our way to being LOSERS!!!

I unfortunately had my surgery last year and losing 10 lbs was not a prerequisit (spelling?) in me getting this surgery. Alot of things have changed since then and every Dr. is different now. I will keep you in my prayers that you will find the strength to go forward and stay on track. The journey to the Losers side is not easy, but I am sure you will do fine. Stay focused and the 10 lbs will drop. Keep us posted and God Bless.

Tammy, I am having a hard time too. I was doing real good but then got some sort of a virus and then broke my toe. No excersize and all food. I don't know how much I gained but I still need to lose 6 lbs. So I started Atkins today. I keep telling myself this is my last diet and if I want this bad enough I can do anything!! I know I'm not much help but I am commiserating.
Tammy,
I agree with Debbie. It was the hardest 10 lbs I ever had to lose! South Beach or Atkins *(without the fatty stuff) is a great way to lose the weight. Being on South Beach taught me alot about carbs and I am using all that knowledge now post op. Good luck and hang in there.. Glad you stopped the caffeine...I think it really did a number on me that I never weaned myself off.

Hi Tammy,
Losing the weight is really hard, but well worth the fight. I met Dr. Aranow on 18-Aug, and he's having me lose 20 lbs to qualify for the surgery. That was a bit disappointing after seeing that many others only (I use that term loosly) have 10 lbs to loose.
Let's stick with it and we'll make our goal together!!!

Hi Tammy
I was looking for you last night and want to tell you about this... I started to eat smaller foods, drinks alot of water (made alot of trips to the bathroom), stay away from Carbs and eat more vegetables and meats. I walk 1-2 miles everyday. That is how I lost almost 13 pounds but it was not easy for me to do it but still use same methods until surgery day.

It seems just because we HAVE to lose the weight we cant. It makes me wonder if it is part of the psychological issues that the overweight have to deal with or what. I know I feel like I just do myself in all the timel. I see success coming and just before it is about to happen, I blow it. I have to lose 20lbs to get the lap band surgery, otherwise, I have to go for RNY. I really prefer the lap band though.
Good Luck to you.
