Hi folks Has anyone gone out of the country after WLS (like a month after). I'm going to Jamaica 9/3-9/7 for my b'day, and I'm a tad worried about the water, food, etc. I 've been there a zillion times and know basically what the food is like, but I'm worried that maybe I should be checking with Dr. Bell's office first. What do you think? JA

Hi JA I have not been out of the country since WLS, sorry. I am sure there will be things for you to eat there. I would not stress over it. Go and enjoy and have a good time. If you stick to basic food you should be okay. Check with the Dr's office and I bet they will calm your worries. Good luck and have a nice trip, let us know how you make out. Take pictures and Happy Birthday. Luis

I've been out of the country several times since WLS, but not so closely after surgery. I would speak to your surgeon and let him know of your plans. I suppose you will just need to be extra prepared and make yourself a plan for eating and drinking and stick with it. It's easy to get 'lost' in the shuffle of vacation and loose track of your fluids and protein. So, you have to take that into account. My suggestion is get yourslef a sturdy backpack or bag and be prepared to take it with you EVERYWHERE. Think of it as your WLS Bag. Keep the following items in it at a minimum: Filled water bottle Crystal light (or other drink mix) Packets Tylenol Your day's supply of vitamins and medication Protein Bars Or Protein Drinks (pre mixed) Snack item (such as nuts or jerkey..pick something you can eat easily, with no problems) I take a refillable water bottle with you and keep track of your drinking. For example, I take a 24 oz tupperware sippy bottle with me on vacation and I know that at MINIMUM, I need to fill and drink it 3x a day. I carry crystal light packets on me in case I have to fill the bottle with tap water (which I hate the taste of) I bring pre-mixed cans of protein drink or protein bars with you. In a hot climate bars are a bit problematic, because they melt. But, if you can refrigerate, that's great. Put one or two in your bag, just in case you don't get to eat in an acceptable time frame or don't eat in a place that has choices for you. I carry a non-perishable 'snack' such as nuts with you, just in case. Take some tylenol with you, since you can't take nSAIDs or aspirin. It's good to have handy just in case. Perhaps you can think of a few more things that would be helpful to have on your person. This is just what my travel backpack contains. Get creative and remember your needs don't change on vacation, they're just easier to ignore when you break your normal routine! Enjoy your trip! Lisa C
