You are correct.  Although some doctors have told their patients to use them, most of us have been told otherwise.  It does not absorb for optimal calcium intake for us.

My doctor has suggested this for the lap band. Is there a difference in how it's absorbed for the different surgries or is it suggested to not use it for both?

I just did a little research, since I wasn't sure about the LapBand.  It appears that the calcium carbonate is acceptable for LapBand patients as long as they still have adequate stomach acid.  The carbonate needs a good amount of stomach acid in order for optimal absorption, which also means it should be taken after meals.  The citrate doesn't need the acid in the stomach and can be taken any time.  Overall, citrate is better absorbed by everybody, but carbonate can be OK for LapBand patients.  Hope that helps ya!

Thank you so much. That is wonderful how you went and researched that for me. Again thanks.

Can you take it.... yes. Will it be of any help... that's the problem. Calcium carbonate requires about 2.5 hours to breakdown during digestion. Needless to say, with any surgery where a realignment of organs occurs such as in a RNY or VBG, it will not breakdown and absorbed. For a banded person, it does not pose a problem because average transfer time through the stomach remains about  hours. Peter
