Laparoscopic or Opened UP ?

Hi Sharon I will just add to the confusion on the table. I was under for 8 hours. I was scheduled for a Lap RNY and after my Dr. was set up with all the tools and holes in my stomach, when he put the camera in, he didn't like what he saw so he had to do an Open RNY. For some reason, some of my organs were reversed. Therefore my recovery time was a little longer. I have scars all over the place, but I am down 172lbs in 11 months and I can't thank my Dr. enough. I was told that there are problems that can be sign to the visual eye during open that might be missed during lap. I was gung ho about only having it done lap, but after talking with people that have had both, I really don't see too much of a difference in the healing process afterwards. Good luck! I am pleased with my decision to go with Dr. Aranow and have it done open. But that might not be for everyone!

Yes, I agree it come down to having trust in your surgeon..open or lap. I was surprised to hear about "leak tests" under fluroscopy...since Dr. Aranaow does the blue dye test while you are open...guess that goes along with what someone says they do lap too. Every surgeon is different...its a personal choice for one to make... Joanie

I AM CURIOUS, WHO ARE THE PEOPLE OR SURGEONS THAT SAY LAP TAKES LONGER? ARE THEY SURGEONS THAT DON'T HAVE THE EXPERTISE IN LAPRASCOPIC? BECAUSE I THINK IF A DR. PERFORMS OPEN ONLY THEN YES, IT MAY TAKE LONGER TO DO LAP BECAUSE THAT IS NOT WHAT THEY DO. BUT, TALK TO A DOCTOR WHO ONLY DOES LAP AND THEY ARE QUALIFIED TO TELL YOU HOW LONG IT TAKES.
