Barium Swallow

I had to do a barium swallow on Saturday. Just making sure the band was in the right place. Thankfully it is!! WHOA! Anyway, I had gone to the ER with severe cramping and lower right abdominal pain. I did the barium swallow and was wondering if it can trigger constipation? I have not gone to the bathroom since Saturday. I am not in any pain and I have not had a lot to eat either. Just wondering if anyone else had the same problem?

Yes, it can - most times, the radiologist will tell you to drink a ton of water to flu**** out of your system or it can constipate you. 

Thanks I am trying the good ol prune juice along with water. One way or the other I am going to get flushed! LOL

OMG! I had the total opposite happen!  They had to get a special Barium drink, some flourescent stuff that was worse than bitter olive oil (they used this to describe what I would taste, and it was a whole hell of a lot worse than they said)..... I tell you, less than 10min of drinking it my stomach was rumbling and as I was dressing in the bathroom I couldn't stop going!   I think I had the runs for a full 24hours before I finally calmed down!   That stuff is DISGUSTING

I had the contrast test in the hospital.  It doesn't taste good. I found the aftertaste to be annoying. Thank goodness I didn't have any problem after.

I believe that the test you had was the same as I had to have for my pre-op upper gi series. Needless to say I vomitted all over the xray department of the hospital I work in. The radiologist kept saying you need to drink more, cmon. I warned him it was just going to come right back up, considering I instantly gagged when it went in. Sure enough ... He deserved it!. Luckily I was constipated, nor had diahrrea either because non of it stayed in LOL Annette Pre-Op  Dr. Raftopoulos
