Why you should weight train!!

Post WLS your doctor will clear you for regular activity, which means you can significantly increase the speed at which you lose bodyfat by working out. It takes a great deal of courage for an obese person, (like my former self at 350lbs) to join and actually go to a gym. I was embarrassed and as I forced myself there in the beginning; I felt as all those "muscleheads" and "skinny's" starred at me like I was some sort of a circus freak struggling to do 10 minutes on a cardiovascular training machine. Eventually, with some effort I began to slowly increase my workout intensity and time. My weight and bodyfat began to drop, but not at the pace I thought, so I added weight training. Of course I started out with those dusty old light weights in the corner of my gym, (I had to check my ego at the door) but just like the cardio-the weights I used began to increase, and suddenly my bodyfat began to drop in dramatic fashion and my muscles began to grow. I am a lot stronger and healthier then I have ever been in my life. My body fat has dropped to what is considered "athletic". Adding weight training to your exercise routine makes a huge difference in your ability to lose weight and bodyfat. You do not have to spend hours on end at a gym to see results. Simply going 3 days a week, 60 minutes..is all you really need to see your weight and body transform into one that you have been daydreaming about for years. 30 minutes of Cardiovascular work, 30 minutes of Weight Training. If you think by taking a walk or doing some silly sweating to the oldies video once of week will help your progress, you are fooling yourself. Make the time, join a gym, leave whatever fears you have behind you and commit yourself to becoming a stronger, healthier, more active person. Once you start seeing your biceps, triceps grow, in places that were once fat, your confidence increases you begin to feel like you are on top of the world! Kick obesity in the ass, become someone who can help others who are struggling with this nasty disease!!!

Great advise Jon! I actually joined Planet Fitness yesterday (8/1) and starting there this morning after job 1 (Star 99.9) and before job 2 (Health Net). I am excited but think I am only going to do the treadmill til I get used to things. Tara

I felt this way when I first joined the gym, but for women there are many gyms out there such as Curves where this is not the case. I was shocked at how supportive everyone was and I actually had fun. It seems so easy and the inches do come off. I am still preop but I will be heading to the gym.
