2 weeks to go- starting 1000 calorie pre-op diet to shrink liver
My lapband surgery is scheduled for Feb. 11 and I start my 1000 pre-op calorie diet tomorrow.
I have the list in front of me, but am finding it somewhat vague. Does anyone have any menu ideas? I have edited some of it.
1. Protein:
a. Total 6 oz: chicken, turkey, fish, or lean meat per day
b. Milk and dairy products- One cup (8oz)of skim or 1% low fat milk per day
c. Replace one meal with a liquid protein. If you do this, your total oz of protein should decrease to 4 oz.
2. Starch: (Rice, bread, etc) 2-3 servings (1/4 cup or 1 slice each) per day
3. Vegetables: 2-3 servings (1/4 cup each) of cooked vegetables or salad per day
4. Fruits:2-3 servings (1/4 cup or 1/4 whole fruit) of apples, citrus fruit or canned fruit packed in natural juices or water.
5. Soup: One cup per day of vegetable or broth based soup, if desired
6. Non-caloric fluids: Drink at least 8 fluid oz of caloric free liquids between meals. Use non-caloric with meals with no volume restriction
7. Fats: Minimize all fat intake. Use fat free mayo, non-stick cooking spray and fat free dressing.
Thanks in advance if you have any menu suggestions!
Do you think I can replace the starch requirement with oatmeal?
Hi Tina,
Such a short time to go to your new life. As far as watching your calories, protein and carbs, I use this web site all the time - www.nutritiondata.com
You just type in what you are looking for and it shows you the nutrition label. It has a drop down so you can choose weights or measures - grams/ozs/cups,etc.
It even has the nutrition labels for popular restaurants like Wendy's, McDonald's, KFC, etc.
I hope someone else can offer you help.
It's cold out there, keep warm.

To make your liver as supple as possible (which is also referred to as "shrinking" it), you need to be very careful about reducing fats as much as possible (and eliminating alcohol if possible). Although your surgeon may have other reaons for giving a very specific pre-operative dietary plan (some claim that it helps you to focus on becoming a conscious eater), it is hard to imagine how having oatmeal instead of rice would undermine any intended effect on your liver of the eating plan.
