Do we have to be on a liquid diet presurgery? If yes..For how long?
Carolyn,
After surgery, I had trouble getting down the little bit of liquid they require. Each day becomes easier and easier. Now that I am on soft foods...liquids are so much easier to get down than reg food. I am finding what is easier to tolerate. By the way I am three weeks post op today..Time certainly does fly! I am down 22 pounds when i weighed myself on Wed! This is truely an amazing thing for me! Definitely not the easy way out..but a blessing..that this surgery was available to me!

I am at that point right now being on a liquid diet. My surgery in July 29. It day 2 and has been VERY difficult. Surgery should be a walk in the park after this. My stomach hurts and won't stop growling. My doctor is Dr. Barba and while I know this if for my own good - to shrink the liver in order to do the laproscopic procedure easier - this seems a bit extreme. I'm not even thinking about the surgery so I guess there's one bright side to this!
My surgery is in a month and I haven't received any specific instructions from the office yet. For about a month now I have been slowly transitioning to liquids. For me I think it will be easier this way. I do not do well usually on liquid diets but so far so good. When I first heard that I had to be on liquids after the surgery I had to really think long and hard if I could really do it or not. I knew that if I was eating as usual up to the time of surgery and then all of a sudden if I switched to liquids it would be too drastic for me. I started out by subbing a low carb protein shake for breakfast and still following my usually low carb diet the rest of the day. I have been slowly switching my lunches over to the shakes as well. I am hoping by the time I have surgery I will be on total liquids for at least a week. I talked to Amy Wardell about this and she thought that as long as I didn't think that I would get burned out on the liquids that it would be fine.
Also, keep in mind that a liquid diet isn't just protein shakes and water. You can have sugar free jello and pudding (if you aren't doing low carb) and tomato and cream of chicken soup (strained) and yogurt and I beleive cottage cheese as well.
A nice perk of this is that I lost twenty pounds last month
I think I will probably have one last supper before the diet of things that I hear the band really can't handle that I love such as rice and a nice big steak but I don't want to gain a bunch of weight now and then have to lose it all over again when I get the band.
