Where do I start to research credentials?
The best place is right here. Most people who have had the surgery or are in the process would be happy to share info about their surgeon and hospital stay. You have to be very comfortable with your surgeon or I do not feel that you will be happy. This surgery is such a personal struggle for most of us-and to get to the point where you are now has taken much thought and soul searching on your part. Be sure to check with other people about how they felt about their surgeon and also his staff. They also deal with you a lot-so if they are not courteous and understanding look elsewhere. Good luck!!
I ACTUALLY TOOK A DIFFERENT APPROACH. I CALLED MY SURGEON AND ASKED HIM WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I SHOULD LOOK FOR - HE TOLD ME THAT THIS SURGERY IS BEST PERFORMED BY SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE, THE MORE THE BETTER. HE RECOMMENDED LAPRASCOPIC IF I COULD CHOOSE. SO THAT IS WHAT I DID. I CHECKED AROUND WITH EACH DR. OF HOW MANY OF THE WLS THAT THEY HAD DONE AND IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY DEATHS RELATED. OF COURSE, THERE ARE A LOT OF HIGH RISK PATIENTS IN THIS FIELD SO I NEEDED TO TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION. ALSO COMPLICATION RATES. AFTER I DID ALL THAT I REALIZED HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO HAVE A DR. THAT HAS SUPPORT GROUPS, GOOD, KNOWLEDGABLE OFFICE STAFF AND NUTRITIONISTS THAT YOU COULD CALL ANYTIME. IN THE END I CHOSE DR. CRUM IN NORWALK AND LOVED HIM AND HIS STAFF - BUT MY FIRST CONCERN WAS THE QUALITY OF SURGERY - SOME OFFICES WON'T TELL YOU HOW MANY WLS THE DR HAS DONE - I AM NOT SURE WHY - MY SURGEON HAS DONE APPROXIMATELY 450 AND ONLY DOES LAP UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY TO DO OPEN - LAP IS A QUICKER RECOVERY AND MY SURGERY TOOK 1 1/2 HOURS - GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SEARCH - I HOPE YOU FIND A DR THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH - THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START TO GET FEEDBACK!!
