Hungry but no appetite

Can anyone relate to this? I am two weeks post op and was given the green light yesterday to advance to pureed food. I feel hungry but nothing is appealing to me! This AM I made a scrambled egg. I could only stand to eat about a third of it...the rest went to my dogs. Cottage cheese with chives went down okay for lunch...but everything else just seems BLAH! Anyone else have this experience? Any suggestions?

I lived on cottage cheese & carnation instant breakfast for the first month or so!! Then soups became tolerable, along with small amounts of egg & soft meats/cheeses. You'll get there! Kathy F.

I was all into immitation crab meat, Cabot low-fat cheese, and I'd make instant coffee 'smoothies' with fat-free or low fat vanilla yogurt. I still have scrambled egg issues...now and then they'll go down ok, other times they wont. I usually avoid them unless it's the only protein I'll get for breakfast. I was like you, Ann and had no appetite. It was so bizarre! Hang in there! -Deb

I love imitation crab meat, how and what did you eat it with? Phyllis

Hi Phyllis (I still swear I know you!!) I would eat it plain, or mix it with a iny bit of low-fat mayo and add some horseradish. I never could tolerate fat-free mayo, not pre or post op. I also would shred some parm cheese for a different kick. I'm not just a flavor-eater but also texture, so the fliud stage was very tough for me. Being able to finally chew anything was like heaven. It's amazing at the differnt combinations you can come up!

Yes, it is normal to experience this. It's hard to look at something frustrating as a good thing...but here's my thoughts... I think it's great to use this opportunity to re-fashion your relationship with food. Now, you can re-learn how to eat to live, rather than live for eating. Because no food is appealing, it makes it easier to make the changes. I think it's actually a gift to be able to experience this. Not everyone does. So, this is your BIG CHANCE. (OK, don't kill me..but it does help to get a positive spin, doesn't it?) What I did was just rely on a few staple foods during that time and made myself eat an apropriate quantity and apropriate number of times a day to get in as much protein as needed. No need to worry about variety right now, just eat to get in your protein requirements. FInd the few foods that work right now and don't make you gag and just keep on repeating. As time goes on, you can add more foods into your daily routine...one at a time. The staple foods for me were: cottage cheese, SF yogurt, tuna salad, mozzarella and ricotta cheeses & NSA carnation instant breakfast. I had them coming out my ears. NOW, I won't eat NSA Carnations, cottage cheese or yougrt if you PAY me to. They just remind me of that time. Hang in there. IT DOES GET BETTER!
