Did any of you have a feeding tube in their nose post op? Painful at all?
Hi Carolyn,
I don't know of any doctor that inserts a feeding tube, I think what you mean is the NG tube which is inserted to help you breathe during surgery. Usually that is inserted and removed while you are under anthestia so most folks don't even realize it was there. Occasionally some people need to be awake while they are beginning to insert but that is only occasionally. If that is the case your throat is really numbed so it doesn't hurt at all. I don't know of any time that it is still in when you wake up unless of course you have major problems on the table and they have you on a ventilator. I know that won't happen to you so just relax and keep asking questions!!

I am two weeks post op..patient of Dr. Aranow's. He does not place a feeding tube..but an N-G tube...Nasogastric tube..through your nose to your stomach. It is not for feeding it is for post op drainage. It is hooked up to suction the night after surgery. It is put in when you are under anesthesia because Dr. A uses it to put dye in to see if there are any leaks. It comes out at 6am the morning after surgery. I hardly felt it because of the morphine pump. When it was pulled out I felt a bit of uncomfort, but the nurse was great doing it...giving me instructions so as not to gag. In the grand scheme of things, it was what I was worried about most, but a very small price to pay...Good luck!

Hi Joanie, Thank you SO much for writing...I'd love to chat with you at
some point and get the play by play version...It's nice to talk to someone who has had the surgeon you are going to have.
I think you are right...everyone panics about that NG tube...myself included...Thank you for explaining it to me..I'm glad it comes out the next morning. I hear it comes out quickly too which is good. How are you feeling? How is the initial phase of liquids>are you hungry? Keep in touch as you feel up to it. How was your experience with the dietician and the psychologist? Any advice? Do's or Don'ts?
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carrie
Hi Debbie!!! Thank you!!! I'm really excited about the surgery ...I've tried
every diet known to mankind...I'm totally looking forward to being as healthy as I can possibly be. I've only seen Dr. Aranow 1 time..at that
first seminar...WOW...what a wonderful person...I love him too. Just everything about him, his program...etc. His staff is wonderful too. I feel really blessed to be a part of the program there. Thank you for your email.
I've never had a tube in my nose...the unknown can be scary...but from everyone who has written to me...well...I feel so much better about it. Thank you for your support! Carrie
Hi Carolyn,
I had Dr. Aranow too earlier this year. Not sure if the tube you are referring to is applicable to all patients or if the amount of time it stays in is the same for all patients. When I awoke from surgery, I didn't have any tubes in my nose or mouth, just one in my arm for medication. Maybe each patient is unique.
Here's hoping you have a comfortable recovery too!
