I am two weeks post op and started on soft foods on Thursday. A few days post op I got diarehea and I starting using Lactaid milk for my shakes and it got better. I decided last week to use normal skimmed milk and thought I was doing ok with it..but have had lots of gas and bloating for the past three days..no diarehea. I am thinking I may truely be lactose intolerant. I am going to get the lactaid pills and see if that helps. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks Joanie RNY open 7/2/04 down 20 lbs!

Hi Joanie: I am doing okay with skim milk, but I have heard from others that what you've experienced is a common thing. I think gas and bloating is common even without the lactose intolerance. Try the lactaid and see if that makes a difference. I wish you luck!! Tara ps - 20 lbs WOW!

Hi Joanie, Well first of all congrats!!! Sounds like you are doing great!!. It is not uncommon for folks to become lactose intolerant after surgery so in fact that may be what is happening to you. However remember that you were pumped with gas during surgery and that does take a while to dissapate. I have found that at 8 months out I am still very gassy. Guess that is a permenant thing. People who have become lactose intolerant have told me that while they have a difficult time with milk they find that most cheeses are okay because they are processed. Try the lactaid pills they can't hurt. Also keep in mind that your bowels are trying to get used to the new way of eating just as the rest of you is. Constipation and the bloating and gas that goes with that was and continues to be more of a problem for me. Not enough to make me even have a twinge of regret though!!! Good luck and keep us updated. Joanie! First, congratulations!! You're on your way! When I was first out of surgery, I wasn't able to handle milk well, so I switched to Lactaid. A couple of months into it, though, I tried milk and was fine, so it may just be temporary. If not, Lactaid tastes pretty good! I agree with Linda about the gas/constipation thing. I am much more gassy ... not in a smelly way , but just gassy. In the beginning I was soooooo constipated, and I also battle that to this day. I still burp like crazy after eating or drinking a lot of water, and the gas is pretty arbitrary, unless I eat too much sugar ... then I'm a big ole gas bag!! Hang in there! Two weeks & 20 lbs. is awesome. Good luck! Kathy F.

JOANIE, CONGRATULATIONS!! I TALKED TO MY DR. ABOUT THE GAS LAST TIME I SAW HIM AND ASKED IF IT WAS LEFT FROM THE SURGERY (LAP). HE SAYS IT IS FROM WHEN I DRINK - IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE GOING AWAY AND MY SURGERY WAS 6/23 - GOOD LUCK!!
