Hi all: I did not know where else to go. I just got a new puppy today. I am worried there might be a problem. It is a female lab about 2 1/2 to 3 months old. When she sleeps it looks like she is breathing really fast and the last time she peed it started yellow but ended red. I will call the place I got her tomorrow. Any advise? Suggestions?? Thanks, Chryssie

Thanks. I just left a message at my vets office. I think there is a 24 hour clinic in New Haven. I will give the Dr. a little longer to call me back. Thanks, Chryssie

Sorry for the quick post, but I wanted you to see it quick, you need to get the puppy checked right away. Like with people, blood in the urine means an infection of some sort. I'd hope it's not heart worm or other worms. You really need to call a 24 emergency vet, they give advice over the phone and will have you check for things on the pup. Sorry you are having a rough time with the new puppy. I am all about animals. I have a zoo here, but I don't charge admission! Tara

Okay now that I have some time, I am doing some research ... She might have a urinary tract infection which would be cleared up easily with antibiotics when treated early. You should have your puppy dog looked at by a Vet and make sure the kidneys are not having problems. A simple blood panel can determine whether the kidneys are involved. Usually it's a simple infection when blood is passed in the urine. http://www.extendedyears.com Urinary Infections: Symptoms include excessive urination or trying to urinate with no urine, pink or bloody urine, excessive thirst. Notify your AC if any of these symptoms occur. Urinary infections can occur because the puppy is being confined too much and not given regular relief. Holding urine can lead to bacteria multiplying in the bladder and causing urinary infections. Be sure not to require a puppy to hold its urine too long, keep the puppy on a regular relief schedule. http://www.guidedogs.org/700/720/722.htm I am not getting any concrete info on the rapid heartbeat. Is she breathing heavy as well? Or just a fast heart beat? Lemme know what happens with the vet. Tara

Thanks so much for the info. The vet called back he thinks it is a baldder infection. To collect pee from the puppy & drop it off Monday morning. Once I collect the pee he said to start giving her vit. C chews. It is like when people drink cranberry juice for bladder infections. The heartbeat doesn't really seem fast just the breating. Like when she sleeps on her side the rib cage goes up and down really fast. Back to the bladder thing. Do you think this could lead to worse things are repeated infections? I know this sounds horrible but I have 15 days to bring the puppy back with a letter from a vet stating that there is a medical problem and what it is. I don't want to part with the puppy but I don't want to start off with problems already either. Chryssie

I am glad the vet called back! Yea, I guess all signs point to a bladder infection. Here's the deal, when you bring the pee, bring the pup for a check-up. You will have to pay some money, of course, but if you have a 15 day health guarantee on the puppy, it will be worth it in the end. The last thing you want/need is a sick puppy. Good luck! T

Hi Chryssie, OMG you poor thing! My older dog, Lucy, is prone to UTIs (urinary tract infections). The vitamin c should help immediately!! I agree with Tara, you should get the dog checked by a vet ASAP. Sometimes people sell sick dogs, and that's not fair! Good luck!!! If you are desperate, go to New Haven Central Animal Hospital on State Street in New Haven...they are open 24/7, and they are fantastic there. Keep me posted! JA

JA: Thanks for the info. I have not been able to collect any pee yet. Though I have not seen anymore blood in her pee. I will try again tonight before I put her to bed. I need to drop that off to the vet ASAP. Then tomorrow I will call to schdl. a visit hopefully the begining of the week. The puppy is so cute but what a handfull. I am not sure what I got myself into. Anyway...I am exhaused from all this puppy duty. Hey your date is almost here!!! How psyched are you!!! I know you will do great!!! I will have to e-mail you my phone number so you can call me and let me know if you are up to visitors. Chryssie

chryssie, Try a pie plate...something shallow to catch the pee with! You don't need that much either. If you can't get it, they can still get it out of the dog at the vet's. I'm getting anxious about my surgery! I cannot wait. Please email your phone number, but even if you don't please come visit. I'll need the support! Thanks. JA
