Type 1 Diabetic (on Insulin pump) and surgery
I wanted to know if anyone has experienced any kind of bariatric surgery who is a type 1 diabetic taking insulin or on an insulin pump. I would like to find out what surgeon was used and if it was a good experience. I have attended one seminar and had an office visit with the dotor's head nurse and it was clear that Type I diabetes was not understood by the comment that I would no longer have to take insulin any longer and yes she understood I was a Type I diabetic- I didn't get the warm fuzzies!!
Any input would be wonderful!!
Hi Nancy,
Welcome to the board. We are a rare breed in this situation. Typically a type 1 diabetic doesn't have a weight problem. I am a type 1 diabetic injecting 4 times a day. My surgeon was Dr. Aranow at Middlesex. He was wonderful but I felt it was partly because my endocrinologist, Dr. Sorli, was so amazing. I'd love to talk to you more in depth so that I can be more specific with everything. Prior to surgery I was injecting 45-50 units of Lantus at bedtime and I am now taking 16 units. I was covering my meals prior to surgery with 8-10 units and am now injecting 3-4.
My recovery was amazingly easy and I am feeling like a new person. My hospital stay was crazy in terms of controling my bloodsugars but as soon as I came home I did a better job adjusting than the endocrinologist at Middlesex.
Please e-mail me and we can exchange information in more depth.
I hope this was helpful.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Carolyn
