Protein Shakes
for the first stages after surgery does it matter what protein shake you use? I have been low carbing for a while now and have tried many low carb shakes and most of them make me shake (and gag!) lol. I have recently started drinking the Carb Options shakes and they are great! The nutrition stats on it are: protein 20g, cal 270, carbs net 2, fat 9 g. Is that too high fat/cal for post op? I am hoping the answer is no as I think I could tolerate this shake on a longer term basis.
Hi Eileen,
When I first read your post, I thought, wow 9 grams of fat is alot!! Then I went to look at my protein shake that my surgeon told me to use post-op and it is 9 grams also!!
You should just check with your nutritionist, that's why she/he is there.
Then you'll know for sure. I am not sure about the calories, mine is 170 per can.
Good luck,
Anne
Thanks Ann, it seemed kinda high to me as well. I know for doing atkins it's just fine but wasn't sure it it would be okay post op. It does have 0 grams of transfat so that is good. I am not sure on how to read the calories. It says calories 190 and then fat cal 80. I am not sure if that means 190 total or if you have to add the two together. I will talk to the nutritionist when I get to meet her.

Hi Eileen,
First of all, I hope you didn't go out and buy alot of protein shakes yet!! You may find that those protein shakes that you gagged on pre-op now taste pretty good. Alot of people find that their taste buds change after surgery. Also some people develop a form of lactose intolerance and have difficulties with milk based drinks. As for the Carb Options shakes, please check out the sugar content as that is very important. Personally I think that particular drinks stats are a bit too high but that is just me. I know there are drinks out there that are alot lower in calorie and fat content that have more protein and taste great. Are you coming to the Get Together on the 12th? I could bring you a couple of samples that I am not using to try out. Let me know.
