bad breath!!! really bad!
Hi everyone:
I had surgery on Monday, and my husband has been avoiding me all week, and he kept saying he was just tired from working and taking care of me and my daughter. I mean avoiding like not kissing me, or being affectionate.
I finally got him to tell me tonight that I have really rotten breath since surgery. I had no idea. I wish he had told me sooner, I have been feeling sad all week by his weird lack of affection. He didn't want to tell me, but we have a good relationship so he said it in the nicest way possible. He didn't use the word "rotten" he said like "really bad".
What can I do? I am on liquids still. I have been brushing my teeth, but not using mouthwash so much because I am afraid to hurt my pouch if I accidently swallow some.
Has anyone else had this problem? Help me, I'm so embarrassed.
Thanks,Anne
Aww Anne, you are so cute!
I've heard about this from almost everyone that I know that's had the surgery. It is Ketosis and it does pass. I've been told it's because of the acids in the "old" stomach.
Go ahead and swish some listerine around, but like you said, try not to swallow any and just use a very small amount. Your tongue is probably white, make sure you are sipping water and you can also lightly brush your tongue when you brush your teeth.
Don't be embarrased honey, it will pass. Tell your husband to hold his nose when he kisses you!
Hope this helps!

Anne, I had surgery 10 days ago, and YES the first couple of days I could smell this nasty smell myself. It wasn't just my breath, but all over my body, even after I showered. I didn't feel clean enough until recently. It did go away though. I know it was from surgery because I smelled it on one of my nightgowns I wore the first night, so I've been checking and it's gone. Also, I was with some friends this weekend and they said I smelled nice.(b/c I was worried about the smell) My honey did say however that my breath didn't smell bad, just "different", which I know is ketosis, because I've been through it several times.
So, just keep brushing, drinking and wait for the toxins to get out of your system. The ketosis breath should settle down once you've had some "real" foods.
Good to see you're doing well.
Hi Anne!
I had that problem too! Only I had a daughter who is never short on words tell me that my breath "really stings!!!". It was right after surgery all the way up to when I started eating soft foods then it finally started to go away. The only thing I could do was brush my teeth as often as I could, rinse with mouthwash and take breath mints. It's funny, but my husband never complained. Go figure! Just keep doing what you're doing and it will go away soon.

Hi Anne..yes, oh yes...my breathe was just awful and my son had no problem telling me. I asked Dr. Z's office about it and they told me I was in ketosis and that's why it stunk! Once you start eating food, it does go away but until then, suck on breathe mints, hold your hand over your mouth when you talk or just don't talk! Just kidding!!! But, it really does get better with time...Take care..by the way, are you going to the meeting this month? Carol
