Hi everyone, Im new to the board. I am 5 months post op and I still can't keep down any of the nasty protein shakes. What else can I do to get more protein? I am losing my hair at a rapid pace and I've always liked my hair. Granted I've lost weight, but I don't want to be skinny and bald...lol I am a very picky eater and that is definately a problem, because I wont eat any type of fish at all. I eat alot of chicken, but it just doesn't seem to be enough. Has anyone heard of any protein pills I can take...HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jeanine, If there IS a protein pill then I would go to Vitalady.com she has everything under the sun. I am also a picky eater and had trouble with the shakes but then I found UnJury which is more like choc milk not so thick so I could stand it. That's also online UnJury.com Good luck! Cheryl

Hi Jeanine, I had my surgery the week before you and I don't really use any of the protein supplements anymore. I get between 80 and 100 grams of protein in a day just with food. And I am think that may be too much. Anyway, I don't really put much in my mouth that doesn't have protein in it. I have 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, a teaspoon of sour cream with some garlic salt and then 3 small pieces of pre-cooked bacon for breakfast. That is 20 grams right there. I also usually have a half to a full bag of Atkin's crunchers a day (I am hooked on them) and they have more protein than most of the other soy chips. I eat alot of deli select ham, turkey chili (homemade), I do eat tuna which I mix with Hellman's Just 2 Good and chopped onions and garlic salt, I will eat salmon and some other fishes on occasion but I do love shrimp!! Turkey meat balls are also good and then there are the nuts...... I usually have either pumpkin seeds or smokehouse almonds. Again the higher protein nuts. String cheese is another staple......as you can see I eat a wide variety of things not to mention the chicken and beef ****asionally) etc. I do like the Propelet Gold from Bariatriceating.com if I am going to have a shake. I think they are really good especially the pineapple and the banana. Good luck with your quest. Linda

Hi Jeanine, Just a quick note to tell you my dietician recommended I try ISOPURE. It is a liquid protein that comes in 40 oz bottles and contains 40 g of protein. They come in several flavors (although I didn't like the green apple flavor). I am taking 1/2 bottle daily to supplement my protein intake and help meet my daily liquid quota. They are expensive though, at about $3.50 a bottle at GNC. It may be worth trying. You'll have to be the judge. Good luck! Lyn

I use the IsoPure Zero Carb Glass bottle drinks as well and also have 1/2 bottle a day, I love the Alpine Punch, Melon Apple and Blue Rasberry. Lyn - try to find a Vitamin Shoppe rather than GNC - they are a little over 2.50 a bottle there plus they have a coupon book you can use! Good luck! Carla

Could you tray a protein BAR instead of the shakes? They are nowhere near as nasty as shapes. I like the EAS carb control bars. THey are high in protein, low in sugar. THey are really my lifeline when I'm traveling or in strange situations that I know I won't be able to get enough protein in. They could be the lift you need. On another note, your hair loss will eventually stop. I personally found that there was NOTHING that I could do to MAKE it stop. It just stopped when 'it' was done. Mine lasted from month 3 to 6 1/2 months (truly, I was at my wit's end, but the time it started to slow, I was sure I was going to be bald). Some people think Biotin supplements help, some people think adding more protein helps... I think it's a craps shoot. It's all about how your body chooses to react to the shock of surgery, anestesia, pain meds and subsequent weight loss. Hang in there. I've never heard of anyone who actually went bald!!

I, too, am looking into protein pills and was investigating the website www.4webmed.com. I found Proteinex tablets, $27.95 per bottle, 120 tablets; each tablet is 15 grams. You can order these online BUT you have to have 50 items or a total of $60. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to give it a try--

Thank you all so much for all your great advice.. I am definately going to try the protein bars..as of the isopure, I tried it and could only stand the red fruit punch and after a couple of days I started to gag. I think for me its more mental than anything and when I expect something to taste gross, it usually does and I syke myself out for it. Im glad to hear that at some point my hair loss will stop because all my life its kinda been my best asset..not to mention i live with 3 siberian huskies, a rottweiler and 6 cats, and its enough to live with them shedding, now I am too...lol

go to bariatriceating.com They have a great TASTELESS whey protein powder that you can sprinkle into yogurt, sugar free pudding, tuna, etc. They also have a GREAT fruit flavored protein powder... then you mix it with water it tastes just like Hawaiian punch -- honest. They also have protein bars that I like. I don't have stock in them or anything, I just like their stuff. I was like you, couldn't get enough protein from food and hated the "shakes". This worked best for me. Hope it works for you too.
