Okay, I have to be the one wet blanket, but it's always good to be informed. I had the surgery on 11/4/03 (my 6 month anniversary tomorrow!). I came through the surgery very well & was home in 2 days. A couple of days later I started feeling a bit off, had some pain & my stomach was distended. It got worse, and finally, after calling the dr's office, I had to go to the emergency room. They went in with a scope & discovered that I had developed a leak. They went in for a second surgery & repaired that leak. While I was in the hospital the second time, the wound from the second surgery became contaminated, so they had to take out some of the staples, and for 2-3 months I had to pack this wound with saline & gauze twice a day. I was out of work for 2 months, instead of the 2 weeks I had planned. All that being said, I feel like a million bucks now. I was healthy enough when I had the surgeries that my recovery period was pretty good, and I don't regret having wls at all. I'm down over 75 lbs. (50 more to go), I have tons more energy, I feel better about myself & I know that it's just going to continue. Sooooo ... complications do happen, but not to most. I was one of the lucky ones Don't go in expecting the worst; go in feeling positive that you're making an amazing change in your life that will make you feel much better in a short period of time. Take good care - Kathy F.

No complications here. However, my good firend, who had surgery one week before me, wound up with numerous 'annoyance' type complications related to her new pouch not taking well to solids. She kept having to go back to the liquid stages. She also had a relatively low pain threshold and suffered from the pain from her open incision and a bed sore for some time. It was really tough on her, but she got through it. At month 2 ond 3 she probably would still have said she wouldn't do it over. However, now, at 18 months, she's do it again, in a heartbeat. Good luck to you! Lisa C

ty guys for sharing w/me I hope I dont have any complications. I think I will deal w/them the best way I can. I am in good spirits and I think I am ready. I am on a liquid diet today and surgery at 6:15 in the morning. I also had to take milk of magnesia to clean out my system. has anyone had to have a epideral? I will be going into a nursing home as well b/c I have noone to take care of me at home. I dont know how I feel about the nursing home thing tho. I am excited and nervous.

You'll be fine. I have heard of doctors who do the sedation as an epidural -- I don't see where that would be a problem. And as far as the nursing home situation goes, you're not going to be there very long. I know they can be depressing places, but know that you'll be leaving & going on to a better life -- it's not going to be your reality. Best of luck -- I'll be praying for you!! XO Kathy F.

Hello Mary, I got my surgery on April 20, 2004 and I returned to work May 3, 2004 . I had my post-op appt on 4/27/2004 and I loss 11.6 lbs. I am 5'9 and I had wieghed in at my last office visit before I had to fast on liquids for one week before my sx. and I had tried several different foods and I feel great. I like to work out and started back walking my 3.5mile walks and look foward to aerobics class. Don't be discouraged because everyone looses weight differently, I protein and following the regiman exactly is very important. Keep up the good work.
