I have a few questions

I have a couple of questions!  Forgive if they seem random from one to the next and if they seem petty.. 1. I noticed I can't eat deli meat with the exception of roast beef. All the others have sent me straight to the bathroom vomiting.  Is there a chance I'll be able to eat these in the future? 2. I like drinking my protein shakes with milk, but I'm concerned about the carb content.  Any suggestions on other ways to consume it that are less carb?   3. I was out with the family and felt a tear inside. It only hurt briefly and was on the side where the largest incision is at and the drain tube cut is at.  It didn't bother me until I went into the gym last thursday and only managed to be there 35-40min before I was in pain on the side i felt the tear.  When I'm sitting or doing light stuff it doesn't bother me but if I try to lift anything heavy, do any serious excercising or in one position to long I feel pain in that area?  I don't want to bother the doctor if its nothing major but not sure if I should be worried or not.  I dont' go back to the gym till tuesday since they were closed yesterday and today for Veterans day. 4. I feel like my weight loss is slowing?  I've only lost around 5lbs since my last doctor visit on Oct. 16th; is this normal loss or should I be losing more? 5.  I'm having a hard time getting in the full 64oz of water, if anything I come to about half that amount.  I walk around with a bottle of water in hand, sipping each chance I get but I never can get close to the 64oz. I am sure I have more or will have more however I will post when I remember them...

First of all congratulations on your weight loss, you are doing great. It is normal to slow down temporarily with your weight loss at this point. Things will pick up soon.

As for the tearing feeling and pain it sounds like you may have developed a hernia. If you continue to have the pain it might benefit you to discuss it with your doctor.  I too have a hard time getting in all tha****er, you can count sf popcycles, decaf tea or coffee or any calorie free beverage towards your fluid requirements, as time goes by it will get easier. Keep trying the foods you have trouble with, over time you may find you can tolerate them again. Occasionally some people find that they can never tolerate certain foods. Keep up the good work, and lets us know how you are doing. Sher

As for the slowed weightloss, I am also experiencing that and honestly it is making me VERY nervous.  I am just over 5 weeks out and have only lost about 5 lbs in the past 2 weeks.  It seems the scale refuses to move, despite the fact that I also feel like I am eating practically nothing.  I'm not starving myself, I eat when I get hungry, and I can't help thinking that if I ate this little in the past, the pounds would have been falling off of me.  I'm curious if anyone has any ideas.  Is it possible that I am eating too little?  I am very careful about what I do eat and have had virtually no carbs yet.  I have been mainly eating protein and now introducing vegetables.  I am wondering if I should call the nutritionist.  When I saw the surgeon last Friday for my follow up, he basically told me that I was right on track, but I just don't feel like it.  Am I overreacting? Or is this normal? As for your deli meat issue, most deli meats are loaded with fat, sodium and preservatives.  You might want to avoid them altogether. I sometimes eat turkey bologna but even that is not that great for me.

Hi,  As for the tearing and the pain, I would get it checked. About 3 months after my surgery I was experiencing a lot of pain when I ate and couldn't keep nothing down. I was told by these fantsatic people on this web sight to get it checked out ( otherwise I wouldn't of) I had a stricture that took 2 endoscopys to fix. But it was well worth it. I thank everyone  for the help. I couldn't eat deli meats for almost a year. As well as pizza or beef. I found that if I cooked my meats in a crock pot, they were actually very tender and moist and I could tolerate them better. As far as the water. Count all your liquid intake. Even what ever you are using for your protein shakes. Sip water when you can.Check out the adds on this site. There is a protein drink that taste like ice coffee and is yummy. I think  it is called ACTIVA. I use to get it and it really helped. I couldn't put any kind of protein drink in my mouth with out me wanting to vomit. I will find it and let you know what it is. Its really good. Also there is PROFECT. That is fruity  and is pretty good. Good luck,  Sarah

Thanks for the advice.....  I have cut back on my carb intake.  The first foods I was alloweed to eat were mostly high in carb content, however now that I have begun to try other foods I'm limiting them, however I do have a minimum of 1 8 to 10oz glass of milk a day and those are the carbs that seem to kill me.  I like my milk, it has protein and i love adding the UNJURY powder to it for extra protein but thinking maybe I should cut back on the milk.  I can drink it no problem with a lactaid pill. Hmm... I'm trying not to worry about being stuck for the last 2 weeks without the scale moving. I mean I've dropped in clothing sizes so that has to be a good sign, but a small part of my brain can't help itself and keeps rearing its ugly head saying: You gonna fail, see the scales not moving... haha...  the rational side which I'm trying to stick with is saying, its okay, everyone talks about slowing and then it picks up again.  My food, for example today is: Breakfast:  8oz milk w/SF carnation breakfast AM Snack:  1oz of cheddar cheese Lunch: 1oz of veggie mix (carrots and brocoli) in cheese sauce w/3 noodles in it. PM Snack:  1oz of cottage cheese or .5 oz of pistachio (haven't quite decided) Dinner: 0.5oz to 1oz of ground turkey meat (sometimes with meat I can't eat more than half an ounce) Snacks I will only eat if I feel hungry between meals but if I can go without them I will.    Does this seem like an okay menu?  Am I consuming to much food?  To many calories?  Should I try something else?  I'm sooo unsure anymore... I mean I know the scale will stall, but the clothes are feeling loose but I can help but wonder... As for the tear I felt, a hernia... NOT AGAIN!  Darn it, I've had one before they aren't fun. Not horrible, but not fun either... however I will get it checked out with Dr Barba's office on my next visit which isn't until Dec. 26th unless I get some serious pain on that side I will wait.  For my protein, I've begun using UNJURY cause I haven't been able to tolerate anythign else, not even what Dr. Barba uses in his office....   Today I will probably make some SF spiced cider and when it cools down to lukewarm add in the unflavored protein to it.  I don't want to drink another glass of milk because it would shoot my carb for the day sky high (well at least it feels sky high to me).

Admittedly it's been five years since my RNY, but at the time we were advised to maximize protein intake.  60 grams of protein per day was a minimum, but those of us with the most pronounced (and consistent) weight loss were averaging about 80 grams per day (with no more than 20 grams of carbs).   I think you are right that the carbs in the milk is slowing down your weight loss.  As has been suggested, there are lots of very high protein, very low carb drinks that are available that will help.  Try Isopure Zero Carb.  Also, I wasn't a big fan of the Unjury Powder-- I found that there were lots of other brands (like Isopure) that were a little thicker and better tasting (and didn't compromise protein content).  To make up for cutting out the milk, make sure you take a daily dose of CALCIUM CITRATE. You might want to evaluate the cheese and the nuts if you are trying to minimize your CARB intake.  For me, I definitely found that it was relatively easy to have a cheesestick or some nuts and wanted to avoid falling into a snacking habit (even with those relatively safe foods).  Of couirse, the fact that I am still struggling with those urges five years later is probably a sign that my method didn't work as well as it should have for me.    When I was hungry for the snack, I would try (and as I said not always successfully) have a protein drink to stay hydrated while also boosting my protein intake.

Hey Steve..    Yeah I think that might be part of the problem, the carbs... I'm going to start minimizing my carb intake some more and think right now milk is my biggest culprit.  As for the Isopure Zero Carb . I have a container on my counter of it that I am forcing myself to drink... ewwww... nasty stuff. I use to like it a lot before surgery now I have a hard time stomaching it.    I just started using UNJURY... the best one so far that I can tolerate...  I just have to find new, inovative and low carb was of getting into me..   I've been taking the calcium citrate, minus one of hte pills since I was drinking the glass of milk, but I'll have to start making sure I take all 3 pills the nutrionist wanted me to take....   Hmmm.... probably right about the snacking..  maybe I'll switch from drinking my protein at the start and/or end of the day into my snack times at work...  maybe they can hold me over till its meal time again that way cutting out some unnecessary munching even though it is on cheese and nuts...   I think tomorrow I might just try that, will have to go figure out what I will be planning but gonna try and go without the snacking and substitue those two meals for protein shakes, heck I need more fluids anyways and that might be the PERFECT way to get it in me..    I've also committed to stepping up my excercise a notch.. Iwas only doing cardio 2X a week at the gym and some walking at home on the rest of the days... I think I will begin doing aerobics on top of my walks and try to fit in an extra day at the gym...   but I must say its hard to get my behind to the gym with my three kids constantly on me and not wanting me to go anywhere when I get home cause they haven't seen me all day but I tell them that its for my own health and cause i want ot be here many many years for them....  however I'm still concerned about the pain int he side.. I have it right now but its just a light, dull ache ... *sigh*
