Has anyone banked their own blood prior to WLS? Is this something that most insurances cover? I am just trying to cover all my bases. Thanks, Chryssie Group consult schdl'd 6/10/04

Chryssie, I don't think that most doctors reccommend banking blood for their patients (for WLS that is). I have never read that anyone has done it. Dr. Bell was asked that question at a support group meeting and he said that the blood loss during the surgery is so minimal that it isn't necessary. You could check with Lynda his nurse but as I said I don't know of anyone else who has done that. Linda

If your insurance pays for it, do it! It's always good...just in case.

Chryssie - My doc advised against it. He said there would be no need and since the surgery doesn't allow you to retain the iron levels you one had (pre-menapause), it's best to keep all you have. Also, the hospital is going to be sticking you every other hour for blood work ups and glucose levels. You'll need every drop you've got. Good luck with surgery. You'll be great! becky 330/315/165

I've heard of people doing this, particularly for religious reasons. However, if you wanted to, I don't see why a Dr. would discourage you, as long as you did it far enough in advance, so it doesnt get you 'low' around the time of surgery. Speak to your Dr. about this if you feel it's an important issue for you.
