The answer to being COLD all the time -AKA- The Human Pretzel!
BIKRAM YOGA! OK guys and gals, in my never ending quest to find some kind of exercise I can actually stand to do and stick to...I tried Bikram Yoga yesterday, for the first time. What an interesting and confounding experience!
I swear- some of those people are human pretzles!!! How do they DO that? Practice practice practice, I'm sure.
I loved the breathing and stretching and centering. I didn't reall realize that I'm not all the in touch with my body any more- but, sheesh when I think about it, sometimes, I don't even know WHOSE body this is! (where'd all the fat go?) My balance is atrocious, because I have no IDEA where my body is! But, it was a really great expereince with strengthening and stretching and centering and aligning your body. I felt GREAT afterward!!! This might be something I could actaully do for a while.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the Bikram form of Yoga (as I wasn't), this is done in a heated room (102 degrees!) to provide greater flexibility, flush toxins, increase cardiovascular activity, promote relaxation and burn calories. They forgot to mention WARM YOU UP! I haven't been cold all day today- my hands arent even freezing, as they normally are (and it's snowing here today!) Could this be the answer to my 'frozen woman' syndrome?
Curious to know if anyone else does this yoga, or has considered it. I would recommend it highly to anyone that is interested. You don't have to be terribly fit either. You gradually progress towards 'perfection' in your form and ability.
Now, the big question... how do I afford to do this on a regualr basis! Thee classes are expensive! Leave it to me to like the most expensive form of exercise possible!
I haven't done Bikram, just Hatha Yoga. I wondered what it would be like to take one of those classes where it's so hot -- it doesn't make you a sweaty mess? They do it at the FItness Edge in Westport, so I can try it, but I'm a littler nervous about being a sweating mess & not being able to continue!! Thanks for the endorsement - I'll have to be brave & try it!
Oh yes! You DO sweat. That is one of the main points. Cleansing & detoxifying. I'm not much into 'sweating', but I have to say it was a great experience, very tiring but refreshing in an odd way.
I've never sweated so much in my life, really, never. The room is heated to 105 degrees. You have a towel with you, so you can stay a little drier. You'll need to go home or straight to the showers afterward. No choice in that.
You'll also drink a lot of water during and after. I did the class on Sunday. Today when I weighed myself, I had lost 3 lbs. Huh? I really haven't lost any weight in a while. When I do it's a pound here or there. I don't know if it has anything to do with the yoga, but, I HOPE it does.
THe best side effect was that I'm WARM. I've amintained warm hands since Sunday. My feet are now cold again, so that effect only lasted 24 hours on my feet. BUt, I'll take anything I can get.
I highly encourage you to try it. It's a very interesting experience.
Hi Lisa,
I'm interested! I found a place in Glastonbury that teaches Bikram Yoga...is that where you went? Is it co-ed (not like I really care)? I'm afraid to feel funny since at this point I'm not quite limber, and my balance is SHOT since I've lost so much weight.
How crowded were the classes?
DO I SEE A WLS FIELD TRIP COMING??
Field Trip! Field Trip! Those were my favorite words back in my school days! Yes, that's where I went, the Glastonbury studio. I've got all the rates & the schedule if you want any info.
If you want to attend, I'll stand next to you and wobble, struggle and mess up right along side. Believe me, the co-ed is not a factor. NOBODY is looking at you except you. There were about 20 people in the class I attended and that was a full room there were 3 men. My cousin actually teaches several classes each week. She's great.
Honestly, as I said, I was shocked at how out of touch with my body I actually am. Balance is horrible!
Let me know if you ever want to meet!
