I had my initial appointment with Dr. Aranow on Jan.13. He told me I needed to lose ten pounds before surgery. I have been losing, but soooo slowly! I've only lost 5 pounds so far. What happens if I don't lose the ten by my next appointment? I am feeling nervous! Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything will help. Thanks, Christine

Christine: My Dr. does not require loosing weight prior to surgery but I am trying to loose some anyway. I have been restricting my carb intake since that will be limited pos-op anyway. Also I have been having a protein shake in the morning for breakfast since I used to just skip breakfast. I know how hard it is to loose weight. Just remember you have friends on line rooting for you and you will do great!!! Best wishes, Chryssie

Christine: My doctor has his patients on a 1000 calorie/day, low fat diet two weeks before their surgery. I ended up losing over 20 pounds by cutting out almost all carbs while filling up on steamed veggies (with a lowfat Asian-style sauce) and baked seafood and fi**** was a lot easier than I thought it would be. You really can get filled up on veggies while taking in vastly smaller amounts of calories and fat.

As soon as I went to see Dr A I started to watch everything that went into my mouth. Its always been so hard for me to lose weight. I saw him for my one on one meeting in november just before thanksgiving! All those holidays...He told me to lose that 10 pounds too. I had all my other doctors appointments and by the time I saw the nutritionalist I'd lost 4 pounds! that was in january! Once Lois in Dr A's office called me for my weigh in I was in a panic. Don't own a scale wasn't sure how much if any more that I'd lost. so for 4 days I went on slim fast for lunch with a regular dinner and breakfast. When I went in for the weigh in after those 4 days I'd lost 10 pounds total. Now I'm keeping with it as best I can to keep that 10 pounds off and hopefully lose alittle more. I heard that the surgery won't be done if you don't lose that 10 or if you gain it back. I'm not taking any chances. Do you go to the support group meetings on monday nights at the hospital? I find those so very informative and helpful. I've met some great people there who have been a big help on me feeling that I made the perfect choice with Dr A. Good luck and god bless. you can do it! that 10 pounds was the hardest thing since I quit smoking 3 years ago.

Try the Adkins diet, or the South Beach Diet. They do work. Peter
