I am almost 9 months post-op and today for dinner ( I felt very hungry), I had a sandwich (2 pieces of toasted atkins bread, a slice of cheese, slice of turkey, slice of bacon, light mayo) and a pickle. I ate it all within 10 min. and didn't feel overly full at all. Is this normal? I usually don't eat bread and assumed that it would fill me up faster. I am scared that I am going to be in worse shape than before the surgery if the food is just going right through me. Has anyone heard of people being able to eat more post-op than pre-op?
P.S. I was hungry about 2 hours after eating.
Sure, I could eat that. Some days...I'm amazed at what I can eat. The trick about volume is in the balance of protein to other 'stuff'
#1 In retrospect, though, you probably ate too fast. If you ate it slower, you probably would have gotten fuller. 10 minutes for a whole sandwich is fast.
#2 You didn't really eat much volume, conisdering it was mostly bread that you are, which squashed down to nothing. So, I'm not surprised that you were hungry again in 2 hours.
#3 You would have stayed full longer if you had chosen to do an open faced sandwich (loose one of the pieces of bread) and put a few more slices of meat/cheese on that sandwich. You probably also wouldn't have been able to finish the sandwich.
Keep protein first, and your volume of food will stay down to more modest portions.
Lastly, I assume that you didn't drink anything with this sandwich. If you did, you know that you shouldn't. It just washes the food out and you'll get hungry FAST.
Anyway- don't worry too much. Just keep the balance tipped towards the protein side. You'll be fine!
Hi Heather,
I'm only 2 1/2 months out, and this morning I had a grilled cheese on Atkins bread - and I ate the whole thing. I must admit, however, that I probably won't do that again any time soon, cause my tummy hasn't felt that great since! I haven't gotten sick , but I don't want to either! This was the first time I had tried to eat bread (except for Subway low-carb wraps), and I've decided it will be the last time for quite a while!
Linda and I have spoken on several occassions about how much we can eat. Compared to others, it really seems like we can eat alot. However, we both track our foods on fitday.com, and we are both keeping it under 1000 calories each day - my protein is between 50-60 grams, and I drink about 120 oz. of water each day. I brought a sample of what I eat with me to my 2 month check-up with Dr. Bell and he said I was doing fine.
Lisa gave some great advice - but you have really done well so far, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Hope to see you at the support group.
God Bless,
