getting sick

I am currently 2 mos post op and occaisonally have problems with throwing up. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, as I can sometimes eat a certain thing and other times it will make me sick. I am careful about chewing, and portions and eating slowly but still it happens. I also find that it lasts for such a long time several hours (4-8hr) after I have eaten. When this happens I can't even drink water. I am not sure if this is normal and just something I have to deal with or if I should contact my doctor. Anyone have any advice?

I'm afraid I don't have advice, but understanding. I'm 2 mos. post-op as well, and I've had the same thing happen to me 3 different times. I've been up all night because I feel so crappy & I can't take the medicine I normally would to help me sleep, because the thought of even drinking water makes me feel sicker. Perhaps someone will weigh in with some good advice. Good luck to us! Kathy

Kathy thanks for the response at least I know it is not just me. Same with me and the water and sometimes the vitamins/pepcid. Will be interested to hear if others found a way to avoid this. Hope all is going well for you. Despite this occaisional discomfort, no regrets here. Stay well. Donna

I'm getting to the point of no regrets now -- I ended up having a leak and had to have surgery to fix that 8 days after the original surgery, then the incision got contaminated while in the hospital, so I've had an open wound since late November. Probably another month or so before it's closed. I was VERY regretful for the first month or so, but now I'm feeling much more positive about it -- having clothes get bigger & bigger helps!! Take good care! Kathy

In my very humble opinion, what you are experiencing is normal, if it's occasional, say-1 or 2 x a week max. If this is happening to you daily, then you have a problem. You don't mention how often...so I'm not sure. Eating something and having it go down fine one day then make you sick the next happens to MANY of us. It still happens to me at 1+ year out. Go figure?! My pouch is picky sometimes. It does get better as you go along. You will find it easier to adjust. Just go S-L-O-W

Hi Lisa thanks for reponding. Gee I hope I can look like you this time next year. It does not happen more than 2 times a week thank God. If it happens more than that I will be very unhappy. I appreciate hearing it is not abnormal though thanks Lisa.

Donna- I really wanted to respond to you because I want to reassure you, what you are experiencing is normal for many of us. I was so confused at the beginning because of that very thing. One day I would eat mashed potatoes and the next day praying to the porcelain king! I went thru this for my first 4 months. The best thing I can tell you, is IT DOES GET BETTER!! Drinking water is VERY important. Try drinking it at room temp. see if it will go down then, or put a little fresh lemon in it. I also drank a lot of V-8 juice at the beginning and still do! Believe it or not, pre op I HATED it!! Go figure. Keep trying different things and see how they settle, just go slow. You have plenty of time to experiment, keep asking questions and we will all be here to try to help! Plus, if you go to the Q&A part of OH you will see there are many experiencing the same as you!! Good luck! love Cheryl
