Be sure to get enough protien in your diet and take your vitamins. That should help.

If you should lose some hair don't worry, it will grow back. Sher

Hi Precious - I agree with the last post - but it happened the same way for me and my sister in law - I was told it has something to do with anesthesia - and the natuaral hair growth/fall out cycle.  It happens about 3 months out - my nut told me to double my multi vit for a while -it started for my sil in may after a feb surgery and me in sept after a june surgery - hers stopped after a couple of month and mine is slowing down - I have short straight hair and was getting worried - but I know it will be okay - the hair on the floor and sink after I blow dry it is driving me CRAZY!!!!  So - you will be fine - just eat your protein and get your vitamins!!  And Good Luck on your journey.  Deirdre

Protein! Protein! Protein! I can't stress that enough! My hair started falling out about 3 months after my surgery and it was due to lack of protein! I can also reccomend taking the supplement Biotin to help reduce the amount of loss. My hair used to be long and thick, and when it started to fall out I freaked! (When your hair is longer, the hair loss seems to appear worse than what it actually is) I ended up cutting my hair ( a decision I do not regret ) and actually, I am gratefull that my hair is not as thick as it used to be, so I guess my hair loss was a blessing in disguise, lol. Protein shakes will help get your required amount of protein after your surgery! Good Luck!

Taking a pre-natal style multi vite can help.  Perhaps take this kind for the first few months post op.  If not, taking a folic acid supplement can help too.  Lots of people wil tell you to use biotin supplements on your hair- I'm not sure that this is actually helpful, but some people think so.

Best,

I had lap rny on July 30~my hair WAS my best asset...I am up on my protein, faithful with my supplements and take the recommended biotin......I feel as though I am going bald....I can see some scalp on top and when I run my fingers through my hair, a ton comes out (my daughter keeps yelling at me "stop pulling your hair out!!")...but I'm not actually 'pulling' it out...it would come out the same way with a brush....I am contemplating a shorter cut with layers...but I love my long hair....I just don't know...........everybody that I have spoken to though has told me that it DOES grow back.....I guess I can handle the thinning hair along with my thinning body!!!

There is not much you can do to prevent hair loss after wls. The effects of the anesthesia and the trauma of surgery have an impact on our hair. It happens.  What you can do to minimize the amount of loss is to make sure you get your protein in and try Biotin. It's a B vitamin that assists in energy metabolism, metabolism of carbohydrates proteins and fats and supports healthy skin and hair.  I lost some....enough to show up in my brush and to have to clean out the shower drain more often but nothing major. Whats weird is that I have always had poker straight hair and it's growing back curly. Lately it has been dry also...to the point where I need a leave in conditioner but that can probably be explained by my 1 yr post-op labs which show that my thyroid levels are off... Others have recomended flax seed oil and vit E to help with hair health.  Hope this helps!
