I am soooo confused
Hello Everyone,
I am not sure if anyone can help but I want to throw this scenario out there. I am almost 8 weeks out from surgery. I have been keeping track of my calories, protein and carb intake with Fitday.com. I have averaged about 735 calories a day (averaged I said) with average of 63grams of protein a day and somewhere around 40 grams of carbs a day. I get at least 64 oz of fluids in everyday. I have been doing the walk away the pounds tapes for a good month and a half. I do at least the two mile tape everyday sometimes twice a day or sometimes the 3 mile tape. Yesterday I did the two mile and then went to the gym later on in the day and used the treadmill and the bicycle for awhile. Having said all that.......I have not lost anything in about 3 weeks. I was not too worried about that as I know that happens. Well this morning I had two suprises. First my blood sugar was down to normal!! A first for me. I have continued with some of my meds since surgery as it wasn't going down. Okay I was happy with that. Then I got on the scale and I have not losed but I have gained a few pounds!!!!! What is with that?????? I did eat closer to 900 calories yesterday ( I was very hungry) but I cut back on my carbs to 30grams. I just don't understand the gain. Now before you ask...........I haven't had my period in a few years so it isn't pre-menstrual bloating. I am in a quandry. I did go to the gym again this morning......, a first for me. I was there about 6:45am. I had a good workout and have an appointment on Thursday morning for a personal orientation. Water aerobics start tomorrow but I will not be able to go tomorrow night because of our support group meeting. I will start that on Thursday evening. I know I am doing things correctly. I have tried very hard not to get discouraged but a weight gain kind of through me for a loop. Any thoughts????

Linda, Thats great to hear about your bloodsugar level. Even though you havent lost in 3 weeks, dont sweat it until you ask Dr Bell about it. I would ask him maybe in an email for when he gets back. He may tell you it happens to people once in a while. Now that you are going to the gym, you will at least be getting into shape if not losing weight too. Im rooting for ya gal. Hang in there, this will pass and you wont even remember it happened : )

Linda, I am only 6 1/2 weeks after surgery and am not loosing either, I gained 4 pounds, but mine was that time of the month! We need to remind ourselves of the major change we put our bodies through. I just keep telling myself, I re aranged my insides for a heathier me and my body needs to regroup. Just keep going with the program and the exercise because you maybe getting more muscle and that is what burns more calories in the long run!! Plus, I don't know about you, but the scale isn't moving but the inches are! the clothes are getting more and more loose! Plus didn't Dr. Bell tell you the weight would really come off between the 2nd and 6th months after surgery? Try to think positive and hang in there!! Cathy

Linda,
Congratulations on the blood sugar level!
I don't know exactly what is happening with you but this is how I would think about it... to gain a pound you need to take in a few thousand calories more than you burn ( can't remember the exact amount).
Even if you are getting in 1200 calories a day you would be taking in less than your basil metabolic rate. You are also moving during the day, your metabolism is still supporting more weight (needs more calories), and you are excersizing. There is no way in @$% that you are gaining fat stores and in fact you are definatly losing fat! I think it has a lot to do with the excersize. I stopped losing for almost a whole month when I started my excersize routine. I got very discouraged but I was working with a personal trainer and that same month my body fat went down a whopping 12%. I think you also may retain some fluid in your muscles while they are repairing and building themselves from your workouts. I am now losing faster than I was early on, so keep up the good work and try to measure your acheivements in other ways besides the scale so you can get some more positive feedback from your body.
See you tomorrow!
P.S. Is it at 6?
Linda, Linda, Linda.......first thing you HAVE to stop doing is weighing yourself so much!! Honest to God, your weight is going to flucuate a lot these first few months. I am telling you, I thought I was the only one this surgery didn't work for because I kept reading how much weight everyone else was losing and it was SO much more than me. I was doing everything right and then some.
It WILL happen for you, I promise. That's the beauty of this surgery, it actually WORKS!! And it WILL work for you. Just not as quickly as we want it to. Remember how many "diets" we have tried and failed because we gave up. Mostly because we didn't get that instant gratification we so think we need.
Hang in there, keep doing what you are doing and relax. It will happen for you! love Cheryl
Hi Linda,
I had my surgery on 11/10 and was stuck at a plateau for almost three weeks myself of not loosing hardly anything. Then last week it kicked back in and I started loosing. When I put this question out on the message board, I was told that your body needs to catch up with the weight loss and will start back up again. I was very worried but as soon as the scale started going down again I felt better. Also you might be building muscle with all the exercise you are doing and of course muscle weighs more than fat. Keep up the good work and congradulations on your lowering of your blood sugar, you will be off the meds in now time.

This was just the post I needed to read. I was just about to write my own letter. My surgery was Dec. 1st and I do not feel as if I have lost any where near as much as everyone else. I have only lost 5 pounds since my 2 week check up. Making it a total of about 25 since Dec. 1st. I also lost 20 pounds before the surgery. I know I am doing everything right, though sometimes my protein for the day is too low. I am expecting my period at any time and am hoping that everything will change after that. It just made me feel good that I am not the only one. I really thought that I would be the one the surgery didn't work on. Thanks for the post and all the responses.

Hi Linda,
Aren't the people on this board wonderful?!
So many replies - and they are all correct!. I'm at a stand-still now myself - I haven't lost anything all week. Thank goodness I knew that Darlene went through this, so I haven't been really worried - but I still can't wait to see the scale move downwards again!
Hang in there, you are doing wonderful, and I'm sure it will pass.
God Bless,
Kathy
