I am scheduled to have a revision but it's not to get my pouch smaller.  My pouch is small but I stopped losing weight a year after my surgery.  It's been two years and I haven't lost weight in one year.  The surgeon is going to lengthen my large intestine.  I am trying to get more info on anyone who has had it and if they have lost weight with this surgery.

What is his thought pattern behind lengthening the large intestine? What will be the result? Curious.

The result will be additional weight loss.  I stopped losing weight one year after my surgery and I stick to the protein and all good foods and work out at least 5 times a week for an hour or more each time.  So it's been frustrating that I can't lose anymore weight.  The surgeon said that this will help control by blood sugar and help me lose weight.  I myself and still trying to figure out how as I need to get in touch with my surgeon to answer more questions.  Thanks for your reply to my post.

I am also curious as to how this procedure will help you.  Please let us know the details. Currently, I am on a waiting list for a clinical trial at Brighams & Women's in Boston to reduce the size of my stoma, and this is considered a revision.  However, it will be approximately 2 months before I will know for certain if I qualify for the study.  I'm in East Windsor - it would be great if you would contact me privately, maybe we could get together and chat. Hi Kathy,  Wow, you are just in the next town.  It would be wonderful to meet.  As you can see I did reply as to how it will help, but I am still trying to find out more details.  That is interesting about the clinical trial in Boston.  I think Dr. Barba mentioned that a hospital was doing some studies on revisions.  Let me know how that goes Kathy.    My email is [email protected] and I see your email under your signature.  Let's try to meet.  :)

Hii Karen!  Thanks for posting and letting us know about the proceedure.   I think that MAYBE the term you use of of 'lengthening' your large intesting is what is making everyone particularly curious.  I'm not sure that's technically possible in those specific terms- however- I'm willing to bet that what your surgeon is talking about is changing the amount (or lengthening the amount) of intestine you currently have bypassed.   I have heard this used as a revision in the past- you may find some folks on the main board who have had this done.  It will hopefully increase the malabsorption rate of your surgery.  I've never seen anyone post on the CT site about having this done (doesnt mean it hasnt been done- just that no one here has mentioned it or no one active on the board has had it done) Please do keep us updated as you move forward with your progress.  Best wishes for your success!!

Hi Lisa, Actually you described it well. I couldn't describe it the way you did, but that is what the surgeon said.  It will increase the malabsorption rate so I can lose more weight, which I desprately need to do.  I am very bummed that I stopped losing weight only after one year.  It's very disappointing to work so hard and not meet one's goal.  I am thankful for the weight I have lost, but have gained approximately 15 or so pounds which I can really feel.  I am still exercising like I should and eat very healthy meals, but the weight doesn't seem to move down the scale.  I am also bummed because I am back on my acid reflux medicine and also back on my diabetic oral medication.  I have to say, I was taking 4 insulin shots a day prior to my surgery and again I am thankful I am not on insulin. It just seems like my old medical problems are slowly coming back and I don't want that to happen.  The surgery makes me a bit nervous, but I feel I have no other choice at this point as my pouch is small and this seems the only way to go at this point. I have had three scalero therapies, where the surgeon goes down the esphagus (sp?) and then puts some kind of "medicine" around the entrance of the pouch to help make the entrance smaller resulting in continued  weight loss and keep the food from dumping out too soon, but that didn't work for me.   Thank you for your reply.  I will let you know how it goes and as I get more detail I can email you and Kathy if you like. Best wishes for your continued sucess !!!!!  Karen :)
