Does it get any better?

Hello all, I just got my cpap machine last nite and slept with it for a few hours for the first evening. I have to admit I knew it was not going to be an easy task, but I am more tired today then I was the previous nite. I am hoping this is just an adjustment period. Also my stomach is so full of air this morning that I was coughing up air as well. My throat is also a tad bit sore, I made sure the doctor included a humidifier so I had no moisture issues just sore. I want to add that I am only on 5 as far as my air pressure is concerned, and 4 is the lowest for my machine. My question for those of you who have been on these machines is does it get any better or will I have to suffer until I lose the excess weight via WLS? I am hoping that I can get a little more adjusted this weekend when I don't have to get up at a specific time in the morning. In need of a restful nite of sleep , Lynn P.S. On the plus side I have to admit that I was told by my aunt and daughter that I did not snore for the first nite in forever.

Dear Lynn. Yes it does get better (take it from a 19/15 pressure person) but it's not easy. Once you get use to it you will sleep much better and feel more energised in the daytime. It will also help your lungs to get in a better shape for the surgery and most likely you wont be using it after. Sometimes I felt strowing the darn thing out of the window and needless to say that I didn't feel pretty at all Every 10 pounds you loose makes a different and with you low pressure settings you might not need it for long. Remember to change the water and rinse daily so you wont deveplope allergies, and clean the dust filter in the back often as well. You should be fully adjusted to it within two weeks so just hang in there, it will get better.......I promise!!! Hugs and sweet dreams from Tove

Yes, Lynn, it DOES get better! When I first got that ungodly machine, I swore that there was no way I would ever be able to sleep and, I confess, for the first couple of days, I did yank it off during the night because it was making me crazy. To add insult to injury, I had an allergic reaction to the plastic on the mask and they had to send me a different one. But I have finally been able to get some sleep (at a 16 setting). I WOULD, however, discuss with your doctor the problem that you're having with swallowing air. It's not something (I don't think, anyway) that should be happening, and will make things difficult after the surgery if the air is still going into your stomach. I had my surgery on Tuesday and, I have to say, I slept really well with the CPAP on. Strange!

I am still trying and thank you both for the encouragement and advice. My poor daughter has been helping me get in and out of the device and watching me sleep some. I will keep trying and thinking how temporary this machine is and looking forward to losing this weight and that machine both. I got another 4 hours of sleep with my machine last nite. I am gonna keep trying I do feel a little better today then I did the previous day. I just can't wait till I actually get a full nite of sleep and feel good during the day. Congratulations on your surgery Bette and continued success to both you and Tove. Hugs and Happy Holidays to all , Lynn
